Shaun seems to talk in a lot of videos about his flaws as a person when he was younger and I respect that. There are a lot of people that would never publicly admit their past mistakes. I really identified with the part in the Leafy video where he said teenage boys "think girls are frightening, and amazing, and you love them, but you hate them, and you desperately want one to touch you, but you hate them". painfully true.

It does seem to dovetail into this video the idea of making a leftist politics narrative video

Hi Shaun, I really enjoyed this video and it was very interesting and relatable to me, especially because the SA feminism thread was a formative experience for me as well! It was my first real exposure to feminism, and I stumbled upon it at a difficult point in my life, and that thread kicked off a huge change in my life (I even made some lasting friends as a result). On top of that, while I am not white, I tick off the "cis", "male", and "straight" boxes and have been very immersed in video games from a young age, so your video really made me reflect on how my life could have turned out very differently. There but for the grace of social justice go I and that sort of thing. It was also neat to learn that a semi-famous youtuber that I admire and really enjoy, went through a similar thing and visited the same virtual space as I did, around the same time as I did. To think, I might have even read some of your posts at some point in time. This comment got really long and maybe it would have been better suited to some kind of private message but there it is!

You were truly brave in admitting you could have easily ended up supporting far right groups. That means a lot to me as there are moments where I see myself easily supporting pegida. We, leftists, should share this more seeing oftenly our sanctimonious attitude scares away people. Showing we all can be scared/angry, etc, and still be able to change our minds it's a powerful thing! I'd love a book analysis :).

Upvote for Timothy. But on a more serious note: concentrate on the quality of the videos. Meager returns in the beginning are normal. Advertising, networking and the like are less important than the quality of your research. If your stuff is good, it will find its audience eventually. Also, invest in a good microphone early on: Look at Shaun, his videos contain almost no visual material at all, it's all the quality of the research and the narration.

I remember the SA feminism thread! I was always something of a feminist (or sympathetic to the topic, at least), but that + the prison thread were really formative for my approach towards social justice, looking back on it. I mostly lurked, but I'm wondering if I'd recognize your username if you posted it.

It's so important to keep in mind the stupid thoughts and behaviours of our past, even if they make us cringe. I remember spending a lot of effort trying to prove that I'm "better than normal women" - you know, smarter, more logical, like a man. Distancing myself from other girls and girl stuff, because I had such a ngative bias against my own gender...

For maximum views: First, grow a beard. Then start hating on feminists, immigrants and anyone that advocates social justice. Don't worry, apparently you can do all these things and still convince a fair number of people you are in fact on the left.

I particularly like that you've spelled out at the end the tactics that people do that are ultimately ineffective at stimulating thought and conversation in people with whom we disagree, particularly how quickly things can devolve into arguments over identity politics that go nowhere. Some videos about Joyce/Ulysses would be cool, since I'm about to jump into the Wake. Also great vid. I'm in a similar boat; could've become a "deplorable" had a been surrounded by different people or ideas. Gives me a certain appreciation for how fragile who we are really is. Also gives me hope, since it means people aren't doomed to being awful, provided the work that needs to be done actually gets done. A willingness to be open and honest about this sort of thing I think will be an important element going forward.
