Announcement: I'm swapping to monthly payments

Hello folks,

As I discussed a while back on the channel, I'm changing over to monthly payments on Patreon. This is just a heads up to let you all know. I have a few reasons for making the change, primary among them being that I'd like to be able to work on different types of content, a lot of which I wouldn't be able to spend time making if I wasn't going to feel comfortable charging for it.

I also suffer from imposter syndrome pretty badly, and the act of charging for any of my videos at all usually makes me very anxious and stressed. This leads to me delaying releasing videos right up to the end-of-month deadline, when I feel forced to release something.

This has caused problems for me in the past - unfortunately timed illnesses and technical problems have added to the stress of getting videos out on time. Last month, I spent the majority of the month working on a video that I eventually decided wasn't good enough to release, and then I had to scramble to make something else.

I'm hoping that swapping to monthly payments will enable me to work on what I want to work on without worrying about charging for it as an individual piece.

Not much should change on your end - release dates will probably be scattered throughout the months now, instead of falling on the last day of the month, like they have been. And I'll start doing update posts on here letting you know what I'm working on, so you know content is incoming.

My 200k Q&A video will be going out soon, and I'll mention all of this information in there for anyone who just watches the vids and doesn't check their Patreon page.

I hope you understand why I'm making the change :)

Thanks all,

Shaun

I bet this guy isn’t even a skull. /joking. You’re a guy with opinions who does the research. I don’t even know how you could fake that.

If it helps your imposter syndrome at all, you are the only person I have ever backed on patreon. I've watched pretty much all of your videos at least three times. I think your videos are refreshingly well-researched and genuinely important.

lmao same re: universal basic income

alexis

late to the party here but whatever makes things easier is good! I'm sorry about the impostor syndrome - I fucking feel you there and it's not fun. so I hope this helps. and counting on a monthly pledge works for me, then I always know to expect it regardless of content put out. plus some shorter sillier vids would be fun! I currently work in a field that I love, in a shitty job. the worst thing is doing work that you theoretically should enjoy but in reality makes you anxious, stressed out, and frustrated. anything that alleviates that for you is excellent in my book

alexis

I actually much prefer that. It's much easier to budget a regular monthly expense then to not be sure how many times patreon will charge in any given month.

Riley

Sorry for replying super late to a thing, but that that train picture was #art and hilarious and is the current background on my phone so like, even if all you've done is the equivalent of that, then I'd say you're doing pretty good.

Lint

Hi Shaun. Forgive the old fashioned salutation as I am ancient (60). I am so impressed with your clinical dissection of the nasties who thrive on the networks that we had such hope for back in the days of 8bit modems. (I kind of miss the noises they used to make: age again! I'm sadly not imune to nostalgia.) Anyway, keep making the videos because they are brilliant and shy away from hyperbole among many other things. You don't need to shoehorn me into the credits (in fact I'd rather you didn't) but I'm very happy to support the project and a monthly sum seems to be the most sensible way to do it. Keep up the good work. Incisive analysis is so desperately needed at the moment and it gives me hope to see folk like yourself & Hbomb, Contrapoints & Oliver Thorn and so many others keeping the red flag flying in a world that seems to me to be summed up by WB Yeats in the Second Coming. :)

neat

All good!

Diddly

Don't worry, I support you as a thank you for all previous material also so I don't mind waiting.

seizethemeansofeducation

Basically switching to monthly payments means that Patrons will be charged once each month, no matter how many videos he makes, rather than charged each time he makes one.

Impostor syndrome is real and valid and I'm sorry you experience it. At the very least, take comfort that it's normal. I've got two music degrees, and sometimes despite that it feels like all I've accomplished is the equivalent of that train picture Jen made you that one time. All that said, I am eagerly awaiting your 200k video!!

Azalea Jane

it was about timeeeeeee

Luna Poplar

That's an important point! I think 99% of all people who join a Patreon for a leftist channel do it so creators can kick capitalism's ass, not to lure them deeper into it. My goal at least is to support people financially so they can partially or fully ignore capitalist demands on their time and energy and free themselves to create content as the spirit moves them. And I don't need that to be reciprocal in the way capitalism demands. Fly free little red Shaunbird!

hey Shaun, i love you and appreciate the content you have released. you are not flawless, nobody is, but you are doing the best work thoroughly researching and helping educate the general population. channels like yours are how we can fight fascism and spread class consciousness in the 21st century. i personally think that your impostor syndrome is just simply incorrect, but i understand and definitely sympathize with feeling like a phony much of the time. thanks for keeping us up to date; i hope this transition helps make things easier for you.

kendall

i somehow feel much more comfortable with this monthly payment structure. so i joined the 5 dollar club.

This is perfectly fine with me. I support people on patreon mostly as my form of granting Universal Basic Income anyways. I am very pleased with the quality of the content you make so don't worry about being an imposter.

Jan Meyer

Shaun, we love you because your videos are well researched and informative. I doubt anyone here would want you to release something you didn't feel happy with. I hope your change makes you more comfortable to do what made you successful in the first place and not worry about churning out "content".

Muchacho Jones

Believe it or not, I'm supporting you on patron in the hope that you'll make shorter silly videos about stuff you want to talk about. Well, I'm glad you worked it out before I said anything

I'm not sure what it means to switch to monthly payments on Patreon - my contribution in patreon is already charged on a monthly basis.. so I'm not sure where the change comes in. In any case, thanks for your great work! I think a lot of your videos hit that sweet spot for me where you talk about politics from the left but with a focus on online debates. What do you mean by imposter syndrome? Are you talking about others who steal your videos and put it on their own Facebook fan page or something like that?

Hey Shaun. Your videos are great and I hope this helps you feel less stressed about it! Good luck pal

Aless

Happy to keep helping, however you go about using this platform. It's actually kind if exciting that there will be videos dropping randomly throughout the month. what a nice surprise that will be.

Justin Paul Morales

I'm sorry for the stress. I support anything that lessens that for you, since I want to think making this videos is as enjoyable for you as it is for those of us watching. <3

I'm so glad I found your channel on YouTube. You are a bright corner of that often toxic place. Do whatever works best for you. We will be here supporting your fantastic content for however long you will be making it. :)

SJ

Shaun I like you so much. Your videos are consistently a joy (irrespective of horrors therein), as are your curiouscat responses. If I ever get around to learning Blender, modelling, printing, and painting a skull like yours is first among my goals - to hold me over between seeing it in the notifications.

Jonathan Becker

Hey My Dude, I'll echo what other, more verbose people on here have said: You're excellent, your videos are valuble and you should use whatever method allows you to make a living and doesn't cause you stress doing it. Thank you!

Have you tried different lighting? I'm joking of course, you make great content, and you're my favorite floating skull.

you deserve our support, please dont feel bad about making great content

That's a sensible change, with good reasoning. And, fwiw, I really like your videos, they're great, you're doing a good job :)

Isobel Taylor

I know this doesn't really help much but I love all your video Shaun, I hope this change can make that nasty imposter syndrome less of an issue.

Nina

I would rather you use a monthly system. I prefer that the creators I patronize have a stable source of income, rather than one that fluctuates while their expenses do not. So, please, go ahead. And, of course, thanks for your good work!

Rachel Anne

wow, sorry, first time using that. Juste wanted to say. If you have imposter syndome, don't feel bad about saying (again) that you're just some guy making videos and that you *should* not have as much influence as you do. The communutiy gets the point. And/Or try getting into contact with actual searchers. French vulgarizers do that a lot. I think a lot of them would love having an interview with this new media to present their work.

I can’t imagine how stressful this has been for you. This seems like a really good change if it will help to lessen that stress dramatically. I don’t expect a video every month. It’s certainly nice but I don’t want it at the cost of your own mental and physical health. The only contract I make with people I support on Patreon is the simple acknowledgement that your work is valued and I hope my small amount enables more content eventually. That’s it.

Sloane

Hi Shaun,

this makes sense to me! in fact it makes an uncomfortable amount of sense. hopefully this helps you out, skulldad

Arben

Sounds understandable to me! A lot of us suffer from similar feelings, imposter syndrome, etc. I support he change and think it's a good idea.

Lexi

Whatever makes it easier for you! Greatly appreciate the content ✌❤

hey shaun! thanks for this change, Imo it's a way better idea

Egg Tats

Shaun, you have my full support on this, and I'm very excited for your new work! But as others have said , I hope you continue to prioritize your health and comfort first and foremost. If you feel like the hard deadline every month is going to cause more stress then please don't feel forced to continue. Like heck, id still be down for paying monthly even if we didn't get a video every month, as long as you're happy! Take care comrade and have a good one today !

CosmicParkingLot

good decision. take ur time with these video's. ur doing an amazing job!

Yoran

Glad you're switching to a format that allows you to make the content you want to make!

I have no problem with this! It just seems like your health would be better and quality of videos will be better. Win-Win.

But cool, weirder shit is good.

hey thats awesome, whatever causes you less stress will always be fine by me ^^ cheers!!

AsterianMonarch

Mate if I didn't think your stuff was consistently worth paying for I wouldn't be backing you on patreon.

Shaun, mate, vriend, comrade, please remember we are all leftists here. We just want to support you because we love your content. We are not buying a service from you. Please take care of yourself and make what you enjoy making. Release when you feel something is finished. If this will help you then great! Go for it!

Valentijn van der Horst

Whatever works for you is great for me! Monthly makes it easier to know how much I'm paying on Patreon, too, which I think is nice!

Gem Newman

Taking care of yourself is the most important thing my dude 💙

Daina

Works for me! The only thing that would make me sad is you trying to keep to a schedule that has you anxious and burning out. Please do what's best for you! If that changes again in the future, that's cool too.

Clementine Danger

I also prefer monthly payments so my monthly fee is more consistent, so I'm fine with the change. Even better if it's good for your health!

I think this is neat! :D

Dragon Cobolt

🥰

Makes perfect sense! :)

Marin Chapuis

i appreciate this! please do whatever you think is right for you (:
