here's the harry potter vid, updated with pix & a few additions. barring any major editing errors i didn't spot, this will be the version that goes live
i really hope the next thing i write is shorter, these long videos are real bastards

Something I think Shaun overlooked is a scene where harry has free run of diagon alley and is tempted to buy an expensive broom but has to reason with himself that he still has the rest of his years at hogwarts to pay for. The implication being that one broom would eat into a significant amount of his inheritance. While this doesn't excuse his failure to buy gifts for his friends, it does explain why he can't buy brooms for his entire quidditch team like Shaun suggested and suggest that he has overestimated the amount of money that harry is supposed to have. The gift giving thing I chalked up to harry not being able to leave the school to go shopping (even though his friends somehow bought gifts...). Doesn't he buy gifts for people once he's able to visit hogsmeade?

2023-02-11 10:48:18 +0000 UTCI only read the first three books just after the 3rd came out in my late teens and thinking back, I must also have simply assumed that Harry's fortune was held in trust and not freely available for his use because of... reasons. Although I don't remember anything specific from the books which might have suggested this, and I'm sure Shaun would have noticed such lines if they existed. I suppose that Rowling wrote Harry as the heir to a fortune with the intention of making the character more aspirational for the children of people doing it tough, but still... it's definitely weird that Harry wouldn't ask to use some of that fortune to buy christmas presents for his friends or new brooms for his team. What I learned from the video about events later in the series was a bit of a trip tbh, just got weirder and weirder. Shrunken House Elf heads in Santa hats woah hold up there a sec mate.

2022-03-07 02:54:06 +0000 UTCI just wanted to say that what I really, thoroughly appreciate here is that you thread the needle so well in terms of her clear personal politics and how they're embedded throughout her writing. One of the fascinating results of her transphobia becoming inescapable is that I see a lot of fans who state that this viewpoint of hers seems so fully at odds with the messages of the book. I used to be a big fan myself until I got a bit tired of propping up someone who thinks people like me shouldn't exist. But while I'm not trying to rain on parades for people who still like her, it becomes increasingly frustrating to see the "she'll come around" argument when we see that her transphobia seems less and less of a social or political outlier. Anyway sorry for rambling but I just appreciate it as I so often feel like I'm called upon to handwave my distaste for her as a person by noting the importance of the books themselves.

2022-03-04 00:02:18 +0000 UTCAt 14:33 , the part where you make the clarification of "minors" not "miners" using a screenshot of an underage Cedric, I think it would be really funny if as you say "miners", you add a miner's helmet to the top of Cedric's head. Or show a stock photo of some coal miners, whatever you like best. Kind of surprised you didn't do this already, to be honest; when I watched the first draft without images I made a mental note to watch for a visual gag at this point because I was certain you'd put one in!

2022-03-03 18:13:39 +0000 UTCFanfic tends to assume Harry does not have direct access to his family fortune as a minor, that it's held in trust or something and he'd need permission from McGonagall/Dumbledore to get money for presents etc. I can't remember if we ever see him access his vault without a Hogwarts staff member present in canon (at this point I'm probably more familiar with fanfic than canon)

Likewise around 1:33:50 I think it would be good to have a picture of the council scene from LotR. Anyways to comment on the new video overall, I liked the new ending and additional analysis there much more than the prior version, and I think it wraps things up really well.
