Mini-Episode 22: About FX's Shogun

Many listeners have written asking my thoughts about the TV historical series Shogun. As they say in The Princess Bride, ‘As you wish’, so I’ll deliver for you a whole bunch of Shogun-related content. In this mini-episode, I’ll focus primarily on my thoughts on the show. But I’ll also create a couple of YouTube videos about the world of Shogun. One of them will overlap a bit with what we discuss today, in terms of the historical events that serve as inspiration for the show. The other one will be about the rather curious tradition of Seppuku. Either way, I’ll post those on YouTube (and here).

Finally listened to this, as I waited til I could finally get to watch it. Definitely GoT vibes throughout. The latter episodes are phenomenal

I'm enjoying the show. I'm less attracted than you to the characters. I don't find them terrible. I just don't particularly care for them. But yes, most of these things boil down to subjective taste

I can dig the mini-cast Danieli, but I have a quite different feeling about some of the characters than you. On the contrary I find the struggles of Mariko and Blackthorne in finding their humanity touching. Blackthorne in particular. Toranaga at least by episode 9, seems to me to be of noble character, but like all in his position in those times, ruthless. Unlike the person commented above, I see Blackthorne and Mariko to have about the deepest connection that could be had amongst two people. Anyhow, I suppost the series offfers different perspectives to different folks. As such, I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
