Mini-Episode 26: How We Got Here

We live at a time when cynicism toward institutions reigns supreme. Conspiracy theories abound. Trust in government is the punchline of a joke. And there is no agreement on which, if any, media outlets can offer accurate news. Normally, I keep History on Fire away from anything having to do with the present, and I’ll hold to this in this case as well. Today, I’ll explore a whole bunch of historical events from the past 70 years or so, which may help us understand how we got where we are. Among other things, we’ll touch on the coup in Guatemala in the 1950s, Eisenhower’s warning about the military industrial complex, the 1962 Operation Northwoods, the Pentagon Papers, the assassinations of JFK + RFK + MLK + Malcolm X, the 1968 Chicago riot, Cointelpro, Watergate, MK Ultra, the Tuskegee Study, and the Iran Contra scandal.

thank you!

History on Fire

Thank you so much! Very enjoyable and reflective of the dirty human experience. Truth, honor, integrity, and moral courage are the precious things we always search for in our personal relationships. Hopefully in our day to day experience we see these qualities in the people that we choose to share our path with.

Highly complicated topic. He definitely did say that Churchill was one of the bad guys of WWII. He didn't say the holocaust was an accident. That was a bit of a media spin. There's a great song by Springsteen entitled Highway Patrolman that more or less captures my feelings.

History on Fire

Hi everyone… I don’t know if this thread is the appropriate place for this message, but can someone tell me what is up with Darryl Cooper? I know that Danieli has thought highly of him, but today I read that he was interviewed by Tucker Carlson. He apparently said that Churchill was the villain of WWII and suggested that the holocaust may have been an accident. Now, Churchill was problematic (imperialist, antisemitic, if I remember right), but … what? I listened to the Martyrmade episodes on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and thought they were quite good. I tried listening to the Jonestown series and found it was too repetitive and rambling for my taste, so I quit. I don’t know what’s been going on with the podcast since then. Any thoughts?
