Something I've noticed about Buffyverse villains is that the dangerous ones tend to share one trait in common. They're smart enough to know when to run. Angelus is the prime example of this for me. He will rarely take on someone of comparable physical stength to himself (like a Slayer) in a straight fight, cause he's smart enough to know there's a decent chance he might lose.

We literally become what we do, not what we've done or what we will do. We're best defined by our actions in the moment. -Dollhouse 2x13, Epitaph Two: Return Change, and the ability to always try to be better, is a constant running theme through all of Whedon's work. The pursuit of redemption is central to so many characters, but the pursuit of redemption requires the underlying belief that no one is too far gone to be redeemed. And even if someone may be, it is the effort and willingness to try anyway that truly matters. It's... not a sentiment that I think most people share in real life, no matter how much we might all believe it in the context of a TV show. It's a difficult conversation to have, but I think it's one worth having.
