I'm completely fine with the ending. Buffy hadn't taken the antidote at that point, she was just able to recognise that it wasn't real. So it makes sense that she would still be hallucinating.

If Buffy had been institutionalized Joyce wouldn't have reacted the way she did in Bad Eggs, School Hard, or Becoming. In my view this episode represents Buffy's spiritual resurrection. She listens to Joyce, and decides to be strong, to be a Normal Again, which for her means being a Hero. The ending just shows that even though she hasn't had the antidote, she has rejected the hallucination.

2021-04-10 03:04:26 +0000 UTCI I really like this episode and feel it’s very underrated. While the “monster of the week” is pretty basic, the story in and of itself is amazing! I love how the ending is left open for interpretation!

The popular fan theory of the time was the multiverse theory and our buffy was switching minds with the buffy of that reality. Because in the end they never even discuss what the side effects of the demon were specifically....so maybe he did bring out the other world for her? ..............since you made the analogy to s5 maybe carry a box of tissues just in case if you're worried. I do have to laugh at the doctor's description of the nerd herd esp in comparison to s5.
