OMG that IS a Firefly reference there! I had never connected the "shiny" in this episode to Firefly before since the show hadn't premiered yet when this originally aired, but since this episode was written and directed by Tim Minear, who missed most of the back half of this season due to developing Firefly with Joss...I can't believe I hadn't put that together before.
