Xena: Warrior Princess 1x03 "Dreamworker" Reaction

Xena: Warrior Princess 1x03 "Dreamworker" Reaction

There’s only really one character introduced Xena that it’s necessary to watch Hercules crossovers for.

I feel like the darkest and deepest parts of Hercules all happen when Xena is involved in some way. Just goes to show which show was meant for an older audience I guess.

She was naive and reckless to begin with but she was a warrior. She had a warrior’s spirit and heart. This is where her arc really starts off and from here to where she inevitably ends up - best character evolution ever!

After a tumultuous event at Morpheus’ temple where Gabrielle was captured to be his bride, she confesses to Xena that she was capable of killing and was scared of it. Xena explains to Gabrielle using a clever water metaphor that everyone is capable of making the kill, but what’s important is that you don’t cross the threshold. Warning her that if you do, everything changes and there’s nothing you can do to go back from it as you can’t change the past or the person it has made you become, only what you’ve learned from it and what you do now.

Thank you so much! I remember this episode made me want to keep watching when I decided to give the show a chance many years ago. I watched it as a child, but had forgotten many details. It is so nostalgic for me and I just love the bonds between characters. It gives me fantasy and action, and comedy and wisdom lol. Love it! So glad you enjoy it!

Steven Sears is indeed one of the show's best writers.

The scene at the end with the rock and the pond stuck with me since the first time I saw it air as a kid up until I bought the series as an adult. One of my favorite scenes and such an important lesson in life. Loved your reaction!

It's up to you on if you want to watch Hercules alongside this. IMO, it would enhance the experience for some story arcs, but not essential. The entire Xena series can still be enjoyed on its own. This is one of the many MANY good episodes written by Steven L Sears. Somehow, his episodes always nail character and theme defining traits. Dreamworker didn't really have very established plots or beloved characters to work with yet, some of his later episodes are absolutely brilliant.

I am having so much fun seeing you discover Xena. It was my first real fandom. Got me to my first Cons, fan sites, message boards. And this episode in particular holds a special place in my heart. I think you really start to see the path these two characters are on, and their relationship developing. It feels in some ways like the real start of the show. As for Hercules, not necessary to do. Some of the crossovers are good. Even if you don’t end up reacting to it, you may want to check out the three ep arc in the first season of Hercules that first introduced Xena. Not crucial, but it fills in some backstory and it’s also just kinda interesting to see. Anyhoo, hope you’re enjoying the show so far. It’s very 90’s, it can be all over the place in tone, but there’s also a lot to love about it.

The best reason to watch Hercules is that it’s a terrific show; as for crossovers, people will argue about that, but certainly the experience would be far better with those Herc episodes included, even if the entire series isn’t present. Anyway, this episode is one I suspected might go over well with you. I love Gabrielle’s shopping trip and I really like Xena’s confronting her evil past personified. “It’s not like your breasts aren’t dangerous enough!”

Yeah the crossovers with Hercules are vital to the storylines in Xena. I personally don’t think that it’s necessary to have watched Hercules to be able to understand and enjoy those specific Xena-centric crossovers.

Great reaction. I had a feeling you would really like this one! I really love the dreamscape angle to this story with Xena facing her literal dark side as well as the "wisdom before weapons" concept that Xena is trying to teach Gabrielle. This is the first episode that really starts to show interaction between them on a more personal level and allows Gabrielle to shine more in the spotlight. Both Lucy and Renee often said it was in this episode where they felt they really started to settle into the characters and the chemistry really started to flow between them. Overall a really solid episode. Thanks for your response on the crossover Hercules episodes suggestions. I'm happy to hear you might consider including those. The first one will take place when you get to the second season of Xena so it will be a little time away. I'm really getting the sense you will enjoy this series as you continue your journey :-)
