The beginning part of the episode references "The Wings of Icarus" which was the chapter title of this episode. The story of Icarus was about his temptations, and curiosity similar to Vegapunk. Icarus was warned not to fly too close to the sun as his wings were made of wax, but ignored these warnings ultimately leading to him falling to his death. In the same vain, Vegapunk knew his research was forbidden and continued which resulted in the same fate. To take it a step further, a big part of his research was also literally a "sun" paralleling Icarus' story.
