Art by Billis Helg
Derived mainly from Proverbs 23:
"Do not look at the wine when it is red,
when it sparkles in the cup
and goes down smoothly.
At the last it bites like a serpent,
and stings like an adder."
I see it as a sort of spiritual prequel to The Drum Strikes Back.
Recording:
Track 1: MIDI drums/bass/keys
2-3: guitars
4: vocals
Lyrics:
Looking for an exit again
In the red of the wine
Lingering long and rubbing my eyes
With one more cup to try
Serpent sinks its fangs
In the blink of an eye
Bread in the cupboard and steak in the fridge
And they all grow wings and fly
But if I could just buy and not sell it back
The morning would not shame my face
If I could get by on a darker hope
Tomorrow would stay in its place
Stagger to the slaughter again
I opened my mouth at the gate
They struck me but I don’t care, they beat me I didn’t feel it
When will I awake?
Collectors lie in wait
Things we didn’t know
But somebody knows and someone repays
For all that’s in the red wine’s glow
But if I could just buy and not sell it back
The morning would not shame my face
If I could get by on a darker hope
Tomorrow would stay in its place
A beautiful crown of pine
Placed upon my head
Never to forsake you, nevermore to leave you
Let’s go off to bed
