Patreon Nonsense

I'm gonna talk about Patreon's new fees. Beginning with two apologies: Sorry I didn't say something sooner, and also sorry if you're sick of hearing about it. Most of the people I'm pledged to have written long takes about it, I don't know how many of them you've read through already. I've been complaining on Twitter since yesterday. I'm tired, I don't have anything new or interesting to say, and I've lost over 30 patrons since it was announced.

In short, this is a bad move that doesn't seem to benefit anyone, not even Patreon. The slight increase in take-home pay on my end isn't worth losing any of you.

All that aside, I'm hoping this isn't the end of the world. Hopefully most of you are not too inconvenienced and hopefully it doesn't heck with my numbers too much.

To deal with the situation, I tried to lower each reward tier by a dollar so folks could lower their pledges without losing content, but apparently Patreon won't let me do that without unpublishing the reward and relaunching a new one. So much for that idea.

Other thought: if I were to start a second profile over on Liberapay, which is a non-profit and doesn't seem to mess people up with fees, would some of you be interesting in transferring your pledges there?

Hit me up in the comments.

Look, Patreon actually listened! https://blog.patreon.com/not-rolling-out-fees-change/

don't bite the hand that feeds you!!! as soon as i can figure out how to unsubscribe from you i will. i can't believe you are whining and crying that someone wants to set up a web page to give you money then take a small fee for the processing. goodbye !!!

I’ll switch my pledge over there

Sean Haskett

Let do it, I'd move with you if you wanna abandon Patreon. Don't like their under-handedness either.

Sucks that this is happening. Your willingness to be flexible is appreciated, although since everyone I support I support via Patreon (or just buying their work, if they've published), I'm admittedly not big on setting up new accounts and splitting my finances and having yet another password to some random site just to stay with everyone, so for now there doesn't seem to be much reason to leave (although maybe this is the wrong attitude :P ). I've also seen Ko-Fi suggested as a possible alternative, since you're considering alternative options. In the meantime, <3

Because I only contribute to one other creator on here, I'm not too bothered about the fee for myself, but on principle it seems pretty under-handed of Patreon, and it's so unfortunate you have already lost patrons as a result. As a creator myself, with only 7 patrons, I am a bit unsure of what to do. If I stay I risk losing support (which is just barely covering my costs as it is) but if I leave I risk the same. So I feel you. It's a double-bind. Regardless though, I love your work and am committed to supporting it, so if you did choose a different platform I'd switch over. I will keep my contribution the same. In my case, it basically means I'm less likely to support multiple creators.

Kait Hatch

I'm more happy with all the creators I like on one platform here. I don't think I'll be ok managing pledges on two different platforms.

I'll happily switch to another service.

If enough creators open up Liberapay as a second-source, I'll consider moving some of my pledges.

PC Escobar

I don't mind following you out. I'm able to eat the fees but I'm not thrilled about them

Alexander Pereira

I personally don't mind either way. If you move i'll support you there and if your here i'll support you here as well.

It’s certainly a good idea, but if they ever get popular the regulations on non-exchangeability of account credits is going to bite them hard. That and people always forget to fund wallets so that makes their system already slower to catch on.

Crissa Kentavr

I would love to move to liberapay

Adam Schmalhofer

I'll definitely continue to support, here or on another platform. Patreon's taking the piss, but as there don't appear to be better options, I don't want to see your work suffer. Do what you feel is best and I'll hang around. Good luck!

I back 100 different creators, with most being at the $1 level. By the 18th, if Patreon still has not backtracked on this change, I will be jumping ship, as I would go from paying 5% to Patreon, to around 25%. I am interested in any alternative subscription site that allows me to support creators in bulk at the $1 amount, so if you move anywhere that lets me do that, then I will follow.

I'm keeping my pledge as it is but am happy to switch over as it's not too much of a faff. Also, less centralisation on one site, thereby giving it a virtual monopoly ALA Steam is probably a good thing.

new site isn't ideal for me but I would still follow my monthly donation that way if you switched. I did also lower my pledge but that was only in part because of the fee structure change, the australian dollar to american dollar isn't very strong right now and my '60ish' dollars a month to patreons had ballooned into an actual cost of over 100 dollars for me.

Alba

I would actively prefer to switch. This choice on Patreon's part just immediately made me think of what you said in your "Getting My Ass Paid" video: that crowdfunding lives and dies on the perception of sincerity. Patreon is bullshitting its entire userbase, and I don't want to be a part of that story any more.

The Packbats

If those are the processing fees Patreon is looking at, they’re screwed. Stripe and PayPal are done with Patreon as a competitor and are squeezing them out.

Crissa Kentavr

Still with you, Ian! I believe in your work. I just hope my patrons keep believing in mine. D:

Magdalen Rose

Nothing will make me unpatreon you except for you leaving the platform. You are a voice that needs to be heard.

Not planning to change any pledges as a result of this, but I had been considering supporting a few other people with small pledges, and I’m not sure about that anymore.

Gem Newman

I'm going to stay. I really appreciate what you do. I'm also a creator on Patreon and I'm considering a PayPal recurring subscription for people who need to leave b/c of the fees. Not sure how I would deliver the content tho and if the doubled work makes sense. We'll see how it shakes out. Potentially it's another option.

Ali

Heck.

Ian Danskin

Been seeing a lot about the issue today. Patreon has handled it very poorly, but while it sucks that it’s making people leave I can’t say the changes are bothering me personally too much. I realize there will be middlemen who take a cut in a transaction like this, and I feel like it’s appropriate to be transparent about that. I hope they make it easier to adjust the pledge levels or give creators more options to handle it. But I think there’s a bigger risk that I would stop pledging if you decided to quit Patreon, simply out of inaction...

I'm not changing my pledge, but probably wouldn't follow to a new platform (international processing fees are a pain, and I prefer to keep it as a single charge / transaction where possible)

I'm keeping my pledges for now, I don't want creators to take a hit in this mess. But considering my costs will go up by 11% I am now very open to alternatives.

Liberapay is good politically, but appears to be much more expensive for non-EU folks due to it being based in France. https://wandering.shop/@kittychandler/99135984611630820

Roo Khan

I'm keeping all of my pledges the way they are. But I'll be happy to move to wherever if needed. Sorry you've lost people.

Alicia Magee

Not to downplay the major negative effect this change has on the ability for some folks to actually make all the pledges they want to make (I get how it adds up tremendously on lots of little pledges), but the effect is relatively minor on me. I'll stay here on Patreon and I won't lower/delete my pledge.

Eris

Patrons now have to pay for Stripe/PayPal fees themselves, and all your pledges are collected at different times of the month instead of in one lump at the end, so you pay those fees over and over again. Depending on how many people you're pledged to, and at what level, you may end up paying a decent chunk more. (A $1 pledge is now about $1.40, for instance, which adds up if you have a lot of $1 pledges.)

Ian Danskin

I don't plan on leaving Patreon, Liberapay would just be a second source for people who don't want to use Patreon anymore.

Ian Danskin

I've been wanting to try Liberapay for some time (I really like the idea that they are a non-profit and they use open source software) so I would be totally OK if you wanted us to use it.

Who's Shaun?

Ian Danskin

I would transfer my pledge from Patreon to Liberapay if you opened an account there. You probably know it, but just in case: the pledges on Liberapay are anonymous and there's no way to offer rewards to your patrons. It's apparently intentional, because Liberapay is a non-profit organisation and does not want to deal with the taxes and fees that apply when selling goods. I say that because it could obviously rebuke people (I don't care much, I just want you to publish more videos on the internet).

Lertsenem

I guess I'm one of the few people who heard about the update and was like 'oh okay that's fine' and didn't think about it again until all of the people I'm patreoning started apologizing. Which I guess says something about my relative privilege that an extra few dollars isn't something I will notice or be inconvenienced by (as I'm not supporting enough people either I guess). ANYWAY. I'm fine with it. I assume you wouldn't completely leave Patreon, I will probably keep doing whatever is the least amount of effort for me personally, no lie. I'm sorry to hear it lost you a bunch of followers though =(

AV

whats the problem with the new system? like all these twitter posts don't really say why people start to cut their pledges.

Kaito

Yeah that’s what’s getting me. We’ve seen several companies start obfuscating in exactly this manner before and look how YouTube and Twitter are doing

Luis

I’m ride-or-die. You’re the second Patreon I ever subscribed to (the first being RedLetterMedia, which... ugh), and while I’m not putting in much, I want to know that I’m putting something toward content I really value.

Spare Parts

I mean I’ve already had to lower my other pledge to keep this one where it is (which was a Quandary) so as long as Liberapay won’t, like, sell all my stuff to some Russians, I’m good to move over.

Luis

You're already monthly, so the additional fee isn't as onerous. I can live with it.

MR

I'll happily throw money through whichever pipe gets it to you, all I care is that the pipe is transparent and clear, which Patreon isn't being.
