How to Radicalize a Normie is LIVE!!!

This hit home for me super hardcore, and I immediately became a patron. I was a Gabe 6 years ago, and managed to dig myself out, mainly through method 8 you described towards the end of your video. Keep making this content, it resonates. Thank you.

I agree this video should have been separated into 3 videos to fully digest the contents. He's videos are so dense with information and ideas, you need time to really analyze and go through them to get the proper effect. Suffice it to say, It's going to take me a couple of weeks if not months to fully digest. But I think he did it this way because it was a long time coming and didn't want to prolong the release by releasing it in parts.

a) my videos are for educating lefties, so that's who I address them to b) broadly defined, I have characterized the Right as believing in consolidated power and the Left believing in distributed power, and, while there are many ways to interpret those ideals, it doesn't really leave room for a third axis. so... yeah, there's right-wing, left-wing, and centrism, and that's about it.

Ian Danskin

It honestly disturbs me a bit how you frame your videos like its us vs them. Like there exist 2 sides in the world an you are ether a right winger or a leftie. The only space were there really exist only 2 sides are the elections in the USA because its set up to only allow for two parties. In every other space people have multiple different opinions on various topics and reducing that to us vs. them feels a bit like you are making an ad for the election.

Fantastic video, and what a monster of production. I think it might be best for your channel to try to keep the videos at 10-20 minutes as the norm, but half a movie every once in a while is definitely something that has its place as well, especially for such complicated and important (both of these things!) topics as this one.

Is step 5 not Trump or any other kind of far right politician that's a meme. Supporting Trump suits their decentralised network system. They do not need to get boots on the ground and canvass. They do not need to join a party. They can do it all online. In fact, using the terms in the manner you define them, supporting Trump cab be an apolitical way of doing politics. It is just a way to trigger people online. Trump is an incoherrent mess without a define ideology. He's just a collections of prejudices. Because of this depending on where you are in the onion you can interpret Trump to reflect your position. You can decide which of his talking points are just edgy jokes to trigger the libs and which are what he's going to do in office based off your onion position. Of course this runs into many of the same problems you pointed out in the video. They can't control Trump. He is just using them. He has no geniune interest in implementing any of their ideas. He has not staffed the white house with them. The closest they had was Bannon but he was just using alt right gamergaters anger to animate his ideology. He didn' t really care about gaming or any other facet of nerd culture.

This video is gutting and incredible. Thanks for your months of work on this, it truly shows

Felt so called out by the bit about digital self harm considering I go on Twitter for memes and despair. Great video, Ian. I wanted to let you know that my housemate (extremely not online and politically a liberal) overheard me playing it in the kitchen, came over, and watched the entire thing with me. Thank you for the sensemaking you do. And on a related note, I hope you're taking care of yourself.

When I know I'll tell you.

People reflexively seeking out spaces/content that calls them emotional distress. What would you prefer I call that?

Ian Danskin

Indeed, a need for community is how many cults and radical movements grow. Give these people someone to blame for their misery, convince them that everyone else is wrong, and they'll gravitate towards you and your movement.

AaronRobertoMusic

Some interesting arguments on how the need for community can be hijacked by those seeking to marginalise and radicalise. I suppose the question is, how can those of us seeking community insulate ourselves against radicalisation? Is it just a matter of knowing what the tactics are through a well made series of YouTube videos *cough*AltRightPlaybook*cough*, or is there more we can/should do?

AaronRobertoMusic

Digital self-harm doesn't exist, no matter how much Justin Patchin promotes it. Conflating online care-seeking with physical injury only makes it harder to assess and treat either of them.

welcome to the world, gabe :)
