January Update: Mulligan
Added 2020-02-01 01:09:19 +0000 UTCHey team,
Let's Try This Again
I'm calling do-over.
I came into January with a bunch of optimism. As some of you may know, my birthday is in early January, so new years also bring new ages. This month has been the start of a new year, a new decade, and, by turning 36, the beginning of my Late Thirties. It's a period of reflection, of getting through the whirlwind that is the holidays, and of closing the book on the year that has ended.
That optimism got quickly sapped as I have been sick four times, in four different ways, in the last six weeks.
I had a flu in California over Christmas, came down with some weird bug that made me feel on the verge of fainting for about three days straight, hecked up my stomach by taking antibiotics without eating first, and immediately thereafter got a cold. This month, which I began talking about all the work and projects I want to do, has been spent mostly in bed.
So, hell with it. My 2020 begins in February.
I'm gonna have to ask for amnesty on this month. I don't like doing that, and I asked for it one month last year, but health was a bit out of my control, and I don't want my video debt to go up again when I was mostly a wreck this month. But this is the state we are in.
I was seeing if I could get a rough cut of the first Protagony to you tonight, but it would be too rough to be watchable. Should have something to you in a few days, and will probably ask for more feedback than usual because this is such a gearshift. Still figuring out exactly what it is I'm doing, which probably means I'm overthinking it because these were supposed to be quick and fun! But, whatever. They'll get easier once I've got a few under the belt.
Anyway. There's not a lot to say this month. We are close to having some new stuff, if there's any justice in this world I won't get sick again for a while, and hopefully that energy I came into the year with can be recreated after a minor setback.
Oh, and my laptop finally died and I've ordered a new one that's actually, like... a real computer. Not a refurbished junker only good for word processing and web browsing. A portable gaming PC I can play modern games on and edit with while traveling. Some of y'all have been waiting ages for me to weigh in on games with no (or crappy) Mac ports - Walking Dead Seasons 3 & 4, Life is Strange 2, Outer Wilds, The Witness - and I will actually be able to play them now.
That's only affordable thanks to your support, so, once again: thank you all so much.
And, since 2020 begins in February:
Happy New Year.

Being sick is a normal part of being human. I've never viewed subscribing to your patreon as buying a new video every month. I'm glad to support you even in your downtimes. Thanks for sharing and I do hope you have enough people around you to give a hand when your sick.

2020-02-06 16:23:50 +0000 UTCSeconding (thirding, twenty-fourthing) other comments here - I would feel terrible if you felt pressure from your patrons to work despite being sick. Take care of your self, it's the only one you have.
2020-02-03 18:03:09 +0000 UTCLet's all try to stop thinking about ourselves and at our time on this rock in production terms. If I know that my money goes toward someone's well being, particularly someone that is attempting to make somewhat of a difference, then that money is well spent. Already you addressing us as a team, despite the fact that our actual practical effort is infinitesimal compared to the hours of work (and stress) required to produce stuff, is enough for me to chip in every month. I do understand your desire for fairness and equity, but life ain't fair, particularly the economics of it.

2020-02-02 19:09:24 +0000 UTCGood with me, ego te absolvo. A suggestion on the videos: don't try to pack too much in them. The makers of these type of videos seem to tend to make longer and longer and longer videos. The last one of the alt-right playbook is over 40 minutes. Shaun recently made a 2 and a half hour video. Not to say that they are bad videos, but it takes real effort to watch all at once. Plus, it is difficult to keep all of it in memory and to process it later, since it gets overlaid by new concepts. With longer videos I often find myself going back to check out what was said so I can think about it. In series like the alt-right playbook you get a bite-sized chunk of information, and you can pause, process and contemplate it before moving on to the next one. Plus, I can pick out videos that handle ONE aspect or phenomenon and send the link to someone I'm talking to, to illustrate the point I'm making using your excellent presentation. You already have a great concept in action in your series of videos, so don't let it go to waste. Brevity is a virtue.

2020-02-01 11:19:58 +0000 UTCAnd it's the morning, so I'd literally forgotten about be first "take all the time you need" by the time I got to the next sentence.
2020-02-01 07:59:35 +0000 UTCBoo to January for all the shittiness it brought, yay for new PC, and of course you should take all the time you need to recuperate. Take all the time you need ❤️❤️❤️
2020-02-01 07:58:46 +0000 UTCGlad we could help :) I for one recognise that there's a human on the other end of this, so don't feel like you have to rush. Rushed work is rough work, as I'm sure you know.

2020-02-01 02:47:52 +0000 UTCYou've changed me fundamentally for the better, take all the time you need. God damnit I'm 2 years older than one of my personal heroes, respecting people makes them feel older.

2020-02-01 01:41:48 +0000 UTC1. You don’t owe me videos. Take all the time you need 2. Do a gofundme for your new computer. Some of us might wanna chip in 3. Does the slimepit attack count as one of the illnesses? Cause I think it should
Eli Bosnick gets to change his patron name because patreon gave up on his blog too
