Lost in Adaptation: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

I bought the book on Kindle and the film on DVD when I found out you were going to do this, and waited until I'd read or watched them before watching the video. Yeah, very much 'In Name Only'. But I did enjoy them both. That might be because I only saw the film once when it came out and I was about 17 at the time. If it had been a film that I watched over and over throughout childhood, I might have been a bit more... tramuatised.

You know, Dom, I liked this one so much I came back to watch it a 2nd time. Looking forward to when it goes live on Channel Awesome. Just rewatched your Series Of Unfortunate Events and noticed the caption under Jim Carrey when you say you love him. ;-)

Wow, didn't expect it to be that dark. I find it hilarious that even the author of the book decided it was too dark for him, and ret-conned his own novel.

Dr. Strange's magic can be explained as "a different type of science" just like they explain the Norse "gods" as aliens. However, since Marvel has gotten the rights back to Ghost Rider if they decide to reboot that it'll be harder to explain. Demons and all. (Which I frankly would love to see so I could see Tony Stark have to deal with the fact there is a Hell and therefore must be a Heaven.) What I'm going to find hard with that is the fact they cast Benedict Cumberbatch instead of Rufus Sewell who is a MUCH better actor and actually looks like Dr. Strange. I find Benny completely unwatchable and keep praying the movie will be put on the back burner long enough for him to be contracted to something else so they can recast Dr. Strange.

I did know that Roger died in the book but whoa, I didn't realise it was that amazingly dark.

Ordered both for my Kindle. Reading the short stories, thought from the description that it was about Toontown toons, but so far it's a bunch of other dark sci-fi stories. Spoiler for the first one, Love Story, people who want to have children have to commit suicide to make room for them on the planet! UG!

That was fantastic! Damn that book was dark. I totally get the whole thing about not being able to believe there's a genie, though. It's kind of like the quandary the marvel universe finds itself in with the movies. With the high emphasis on science, how do they introduce one of their strongest Characters, Dr. Strange. We can accept a guy that turns green, 9 feet tall, and somehow keeps his pants on. However, a cloaked magician for some reason is a bit much. I'm glad I didn't read the book. Not cause of the liberties the movie took that make it seem more the canon than the book, but cause it just, by your description, seemed overall perfunctory. As always, your videos seem to short cause they are really, freakin enjoyable. On a side note. Although I'm holding a lot of reservations for the Batman v Superman movie (a serious re-hash of a part of the Dark Knight Returns), there is a thing about the Suicide Squad that really bothers me. Floyd Lawton, Deadshot, is a scumbag. There is really very little, if anything, redeeming about him in the original Squad run. In fact, he became so popular that he managed a mini series where his family was without a doubt one of the most screwed up in all of comics. The climax occurs when he manages to cripple his own mother! And that was the happy ending. When I see Will Smith being all dad like to a daughter and putting in his Smith-isms on the character, "Lets go save the world" . It makes me cringe. I be very trepadacious about this movie. Sorry I went off in a mini-rant, but I really loved the Squad, one of the best written comic series ever. Damn, I talk waaaaay too much about comics.

Great review! Loved how the opening went down. I have a feeling the alternate "In name only" format is going to be useful the next time something like, well, this happens.

One of my favourite movies of all time. Well, as an adaptation it clearly fails, it's pretty much a completely different story and set of characters, but it's such a GOOD story and set of characters that it's very hard not to forgive it. Hell, especially when the damn AUTHOR said he thought the movie was better than the book! I'll probably bump the book up on my list of "Books I Need to Read" as it's been lazing around at the bottom of it for a while. I'm amazed how quickly you're able to read all these, it takes me forever to finish a book.

Love that song, love it in the opening. The music through the whole thing is really excellent, and I appreciate the more flexible format to help you deal with such a fundamentally different adaptation. :)

The neat thing about the sequel is the introduction of Eddie's sister who's in a mix-raced marriage with a toon and has children with him.
