If anyone would like to see this movie and is having trouble getting a hold of it (because copala has refused a Blu-ray release in the US) You might want to know that there is actually a Blu-ray release in Australia from madman entertainment Oftentimes their blu-rays are labeled as region b, but are actually region free secretly, (they used to do this with the cartoon Network shows they would release)

i also took it as a metaphor for the feeling of creating art in general, it made sense to me but also i was very high, so

Ok one thing I feel like you guys missed or didn’t address - there’s a running theme/motif of “architecture is music frozen in time” that I do think explains what they are trying to do with the loss of the time freezing powers scene. You see it in a nice subtle way at the parade where orchestral riffs are over static shots of buildings, and later in an unsubtle way where they literally say that line. And I think the time stopping stuff is then a metaphor for his architectural creative output. Is it an interesting point? Nah. But I’d say it’s slightly more coherent than you guys made it sound 🙃

I am so glad at the amount of sighs I am hearing, because that's exactly how I felt. Every time I tried to understand or explain or even just try to grasp, I don't think I have ever sighed this much in a movie theater before.

Karsent

Julia's Caesar. . . the names are so subtle 😂

Echoes from Elsewhere

just sat there like "okay i guess nazis AND al qaeda exist in this universe"

sarah

it was not until listening to this podcast that i realized the 9/11 footage was supposed to be the asteroid. i had completely forgotten about the asteroid. i just thought the events of 9/11 were happening in the movie

sarah

Sorry to put this poison in your brain, but the way to remember the female lead's name is easy because it's julia and cesar. Julia cesar. Like Julius Cesar, but you know, dumb.

"politics I hope he hasn't thought through" was my thought, especially after that pre-screening interview with Spike Lee and DeNiro

Max Miller

I just want there to *be* a Dan's podcast. Can we start a 2nd Patreon or something and make that happen?

orestes

My personal favourite moments not mentioned- 1. A cut during Wow and Cesar’s sex scene that implies that she has been talking about her career ambition uninterrupted throughout foreplay and sex 2. Cut in footage of hitler and the civil rights movement in the middle of a monologue

Erin Toohey

When Emily said the theater when she saw Serenity (2019) was full of teenage girls and moms I gasped out loud. 😂

Wait is this the Fountainhead

I am hyped for this. I came out of this movie and the main takeaway I had was that it was like listening to my grandpa ramble in a vaguely optimistic way about the future for two hours - no substantial ideas and some politics I really hope he hasn’t thought through. And Aubrey Plaza was great.

Paige Gannon

This movie did not seem big on events having consequences.

I have not seen this movie but from the trailer and everything I know about the plot, it seems like it was created by AI.

Something which has been bugging me since I first heard about this movie. My immediate thought was “Is this intended to be a modern take on Fritz Lang’s Metropolis?” Because I think something like that could potentially be great. But I hadn’t heard anyone else make the comparison during the buildup to this movie’s release and I don’t know why. Now that it’s out it seems like it isn’t really like that at all, which is a shame.

Stephen

You all may scoff, but some of us have been waiting decades for a SimCity movie

Stephen

This movie but they needle drop ‘This is America’ at the part where they stop with the ’New Rome’ bit. Nothing else changes.

emergre

A theater near me had the version with the real life person in it and they didn't have a spotlight, just raised the lights of the theater halfway. so my friend didn't even notice the guy asking a question it was so underdone

MaxMin

I love all your recent stuff, but I was just thinking recently that I miss your movie vlogs. Those were fun!

T. Delligatti

Based on the commentary you won’t be able to follow the movie itself 😂

Kyron

Oh my God, I was wrong It was America all along

I want to brainstorm names for Dan's new podcast.

Haven't finished this yet so I don't know if you mention this, but the fact that Caesar hooks up with Julia (the name of the real guys daughter) is... a choice. I'd not think anything of it normally but this film is so blunt with it's name references that I'm side eyeing it.

Hannah Lyons

I'm not sure where, but part way through this I started imaging the described scenes as if they had been directed by Wes Anderson.

James Rule

well now I need to see this for the never-before-seen 9/11 footage

Eric Wolfsberg

The more I hear about this movie, the more I am reminded of Jupiter Ascending

Kathy Clysm

Will I be able to follow this if I haven't seen the movie?

Kiefer Ortiz

To butcher a well-trod Ebert quote, Francis Ford Coppola has learned that classic art sometimes references Shakespeare, but he has not yet learned why.

Julia Krystosek

Unfortunately, your warning came in too late to stop me from seeing this last night and having what can only be described as the cinematic equivalent of a bad mescaline trip

Philip Coulam-Jones

I'm so happy that this movie will make more people think about the fall of the Roman Empire, a very important thing that not enough people are thinking about.

Cameron Sours

I can't wait for this movie... to be dissected by the bevy of the writers I support on Patreon (this is already the 2nd posted today)

It was so worth it to subscribe! Stoked to hear your thoughts.
