2023-02-05 02:30:45 +0000 UTCEvery single Marine knows who John Basilone is. The next episode is even worse, just the most brutal campaign our troops fought in the Pacific. The Okinawa Campaign is what lead us to dropping the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was so bad on Okinawa, and our leadership knew the loss of life would be even worse if we invaded mainland Japan so they decided to use the atom bombs instead to try and force Japan into peace talks. It sounds terrible to say, but those atom bombs actually saved way more lives than what would have been lost if there was a ground campaign on mainland Japan.
