Title: Cover Up

While Tsunade would like nothing more to return to Kai’s side and confirm his injuries, she cannot do so after such a sudden event. The Sannin make themself comfortable on the sofa set within the Hokage office as they observe other Shinobi enter and leave the office as Hiruzen directs the situation, leaving the trio for last. It’s not unsurprising. Unlike the trio, other Shinobi’s jobs fall directly under Hiruzen’s responsibility of maintaining Konoha’s safety, the perpetual priority of a Kage.

Amongst the trio, as per their previous orders, one of them continues broadly surveilling Konoha to keep pesky, invisible spies at bay. Being the most experienced on the subject, Orochimaru maintains her Sage Mode. So she is also the least worried about Kai since she sensed him enter his laboratory before- well, the Snake Sannin isn’t the one to comment upon others’ private moments.

“Now that’s done,” Hiruzen massages his head, removing his pitch-black helmet as he walks over to the one-seater sofa, pouring himself a drink. His improvements are stellar since Hiruzen doesn’t feel the need to smoke his pipe, something he would have been doing a few years ago. He still smokes, but it’s no longer out of compulsive need.

“What do you make of the Raikage’s attack?” He questions his former students.

“He had some injury,” Tsunade shrugs, sipping her sake. “Jiraiya managed to get a proper hit because the man suddenly lost focus and fell to his knee.”

Hiruzen doesn’t question what jutsu hurt the Raikage to that nightmarish extent. Instead, he keeps the topic going, “If a dying Raikage believes that his life is worth his son’s rescue, then the situation may not be so different.”

“A’s son lacks experience,” Orochimaru crosses her arms. The action attracts Hiruzen’s attention since she is no longer tying her bust. Her fun for keeping her gender a secret ended with Hiruzen, and she would instead let her puppies breathe a little.

“Ehm,” Tsunade narrows her eyes, making Hiruzen avert his eyes at once as he smiles wryly.

“Sorry, I’m not used to it.”

“You’re not used to boobs?” Jiraiya scoffs. “That’s a shameless lie, old man. You’ve disappointed me and countless others who had a crush on Biwako Oba!”

“Shut up!” Hiruzen snaps back, matching Jiraiya’s glare.

“Anyway,” Orochimaru smirks. “It’s either this or something else that’s going to snap the bubble.” She narrows her eyes. “However, should we be the one to start it?”

Jiraiya frowns as Hiruzen shakes his head, “No, it won’t be us. Our defenses are solid enough, and the funding from Honou City this time is nothing to scoff at. Our weapons storage is filled to the brim, too.”

“Not the Fuin ones,” Tsunade remarks idly. “We have little going on in that regard except Nagato, Kai, and Minato. Even Kushina doesn’t apply herself to Fuinjutsu aside from mastering the stuff she received from Grandma.”

“What about me?!” Jiraiya snarks. “I’ve got a few new seals!”

“Aren’t you focused on your book?” Tsunade retorts sincerely. “I thought you wouldn’t have time since you like writing more.”

“Well, I do,” Jiraiya leans back, sipping his sake. “But I don’t have a choice, right? I wouldn’t have gotten such a clean hit on the Raikage if I wasn’t jumping back and forth between Mount Myoboku and Konoha to train Taiyogan.”

“You mastered that Jutsu?” Hiruzen’s eyelids jump in surprise.

“Not even close,” Jiraiya snickers. “I’m just good enough not to die by that jutsu.”

“That was a surprising one,” Orochimaru admits.

“Yeah,” Tsunade mutters as she keeps her worries from slipping on her face.

“Still, you three did good,” Hiruzen grins. “That’s one less enemy to worry about. You three are sure that he died, right?”

“Hmm, he did,” Orochimaru nods. “I suppose our bounties are about to increase again with this stunt. Especially Tsunade’s.”

Mokuton, Sage Mode, and Hashirama as her Grandfather? Yeah, that will do it.

“I’m more worried about Nawaki,” Tsunade grunts. “Others will try and target him during the war.”

“He’s strong,” Hiruzen sips his drink. “And he never lost his drive to grow stronger.”

“Oh, that’s because Kai pissed him off again at Honou City,” Tsunade smirks, more than pleased with her Legacy Guardian’s act of rekindling her brother’s flames to work hard.

---

Similar to Hiruzen, Kai Kuroyuki focuses on further damage control. He can blame Raikage’s death on the Sannin, but his actions can’t! He still needs a reasonable excuse for that aside from somehow finding those cum-men.

‘Maybe I can cum a lot and- NAH! Banish that thought at once!’ Kai sweats as he shakes his head. Recalling something useful, Kai makes his way out of Kumogakure at blinding speed. The scenery shifts under his feet as if slides in a presentation. Still, his Sage Mode allows him to keep his reflexes and senses tip-top and carefully perceive what he wants to find.

Land of Lightning is one of the larger countries, so finding his target should be as challenging as finding a needle in a haystack. Fortunately—

The veins around his left eye bulge as flaming patterns creep and solidify into the sclera of his eyeball, leaving it pitch-black and his once dark pupil a pool of pale yellow irides surrounding a barely visible pupil.

The Byakugan!

Like any sensory jutsu and dojutsu, the Byakugan has reserved training stages, although not specific like the Sharingan. If he’s correct, one of the Hyugas in the previous war claimed that they could easily perceive chakra signatures from a few kilometers away, even more—if they trained harder.

However, Kai cannot change the intensity of his Byakugan with training. His dojutsu are like add-ons to his skills. Fortunately, his Byakugan belonged to Hiashi’s and Hizashi’s father. The former patriarch may be racially motivated, but he took pride in his Hyuga heritage and trained his Byakugan to the extreme, allowing Kai a distorted, straight-line vision as far as 16 kilometers!

And with a simple trick, he can turn this into a broad sweep of 16 Kilometers of radius instead!

How?

It’s simple.

Kai stops in a spot and looks around with his Byakugan active, physically turning to look in different directions before moving on.

There! He skimmed through the area with a radius of 16 kilometers in a few seconds.

His search isn’t for long since he already knows what’s his target’s target—20 men, 5 squads.

Sunagakure.

‘Would you look at that?’ Kai smirks. ‘Won’t it be a shame if the Raikage faced this squad before getting poisoned by a cheap shot? That’s an unfortunate turn of events, isn’t it? He would want to secure his successor as quickly as possible since he doesn’t have time to counter the fast poison.’

He refrains from cackling aloud.

‘That’s about it~! Huff, it was tiring! Next, I’ll have to let things play out organically. A’s son is back, the Raikage is dead, and Kumogakure still possesses its Jinchurikis. Although—’

Kai looks at his fist, ‘I still don’t understand why I’m so keen on believing Hachibi. It’s not like others wouldn’t notice something wrong with me if I were in a Genjutsu, shared senses and all. No, all of us feel the same. Is it the tailed beast's secret bro fist or something? Yonbi was the same.’

He snaps out of his thoughts.

‘Anyway, let’s make it quick.’

---

Ita—the lankier zetsu and the appointed spymaster—places a small, sealed earthen jar between the mummified statue’s teeth. He silently jumps down the sculpture as Mukai snipes the jar stuck between the teeth using a shuriken.

*Crack*

Visible, wispy, deep red chakra escapes the shattered pot before entering the sculpture as Mukai whistles, “You were right. It absorbed the chakra without any external nudge.”

“That’s the only amount we could absorb from Nibi’s jinchuriki. The Raikage’s battle was intense but short,” the black zetsu around Rama replies somberly.

“And why didn’t you escape with Yugito Nii?” Ura steps out of the darkness, critically glaring at Rama, Black Zetsu, and Ita.

“It was my decision,” the Black Zetsu comments, “I would never risk someone like Kai getting curious about our motives and chasing us down to Amegakure.”

Mukai sensed tension between the duo as he nudged Tobi’s shoulder, causing the spiral-masked face of Zetsu to look back.

“What’s with them?”

“Them?” Tobi, also Guruguru for his friends, spins on the spot while giggling like a child. “Ura was our boss until we recruited the Raikage. And then Black came along~!”

“Guruguru,” Ita stops the spinning Zetsu as Ura narrows his eyes. “Apologies, it wasn’t my intention to question your motives.”

“I know that,” Black Zetsu replies. “We all want the same thing.”

“And that is?” Mukai inquires. “I still don’t know shit.”

“You aren’t cut out for it,” Black glances at Mukai. “Our next mission is to find Sanbi’s Jinchuriki. Ita?”

“Right, I’ll scout Kirigakure,” the tall, hunched Zetsu nods.

“Anyway,” Ura crosses his arms, frowning, “Kumogakure became too dangerous to traverse. We’ll have to find a way to separate Hachibi’s jinchuriki later.”

“Not necessarily,” Black Zetsu comments. “Still, it’s not our immediate concern.”

“Sigh,” Mukai groans. “Don’t make me go after Sanbi’s jinchuriki. Find another chump again.”

“Sakumo should join us later. But you’ll have to do it for now.”

Mukai retorts, “Why don’t you just use sealed chakra as you did with Nibi’s Jinchuriki?”

“It’s not something you need to concern yourself with,” Black seeps into the ground with Rama as Mukai points out with a sharp stare, “I’m not done yet.”

Black and other Zetsu stop as Mukai continues, “It IS my concern if I’m deployed for it. Answer my questions.”

Ura inclines his head, “We have some leeway. You saw it, right? The sculpture is alive. It’s designed for a specific use, and the tailed beasts are convenient chakra sources to power it. Or would you like to capture billions of civilians to compensate for a bijuu or two?”

Mukai strokes his chin, humming, “I see.” A bout of suspicion enters and leaves his gaze in a fraction of a second. He decides to clarify the matter instead of burying his doubts, as a Shinobi usually would.

“And why don’t we sacrifice billions?”

“It will attract fatal attention to us,” Ura continues with a grin, revealing his jagged teeth, “Do you think the six of us can handle the joint forces of nations and Shinobi?”

“I don’t,” Mukai smirks. “Fine, I’ll do it. But it will cost you more money.”

“Acceptable,” Black Zetsu cuts in, adding dryly, “You can leave.”

As Mukai leaves, Ura stops Black Zetsu from retreating again.

“Everyone, hear me out,” Ura ponders. “Why don’t we invite Kai?”

“Eh?” Tobi stops dancing while others stare at Ura.

“Because he’s the enemy?” Ita smirks weirdly, “Are you alright, brother?”

“Why is he the enemy?” Ura shakes his head, pointing out, “He hasn’t broken our cover. Of course, that’s partly due to the hidden threat of us doing the same. His motives are unknown to us, and ours are unimaginable to him, too. We find out what he wants and offer it for his assistance.”

Instead of shutting the idea down, Black Zetsu contemplates the situation before pointing out, “There’s no leverage on him yet. As you said, we know things about him, but he knows about us, too. The threat of leaking his actions won’t make him budge. We cannot implant the cursed seal on him since he’s a Sage and wary of us. He would smell us a mile away. We cannot enter Konoha easily and take his loved ones hostage to the cursed seal either.”

“And,” Rama cuts in, using his mouth instead of letting Black Zetsu occupy him without any control. “He’s dangerous. Why would a man spreading his network into different Shinobi settlements work for us without scheming against us?”

“You cannot expect excellence without ambition. That will only leave you with more individuals like Mukai,” Ura retorts. “And I have been reviewing all the information from Ita’s network. There is one shinobi close to Kai who isn’t in Kumo or Konoha.”

Zetsu muses for a few seconds before warning, “As Rama said, Kai is a dangerous force—whom we know little of.”

“He’s an emotional bag of flesh and blood,” Ura remarks. “And he can be of use in the right way.”

“Uh,” Tobi clears his throat. “Isn’t he shagging up with Kyubi’s jinchuriki? What will you do then?”

“We plan accordingly,” Black Zetsu concludes the impromptu meeting. “I will consult with ‘Him.’ He is getting weaker, so we either find a way to retrieve the Rinnegan or rush to collect the Bijuu’s chakra.”

Others leave the spacious cave, leaving Ura. He glances at the sculpture behind him before shaking his head and melding with the ground.

---

“So, M found traces of poison in Lord Third’s corpse, while Atamui explained that he convened the War Council as per the Raikage’s request. Nobody knows why he did that, but Atamui believes that Lord Third knew he was going to die and wanted to quickly recover his son without the news spreading out. M also confirmed Bro’s condition and said he will recover to consciousness in a few hours.”

Killer B stands at the cliff’s edge, watching the clouds swallow the moon and hide it from his vision as his shades lose their reflection, leaving a grim visage on his gloomy face. He continues speaking softly.

“T confirmed the use of the Heavenly Transfer Jutsu that sent Lord Third to Land of Fire’s outskirts, from where he invaded Konoha before using the seal on his body to make Atamui use the Jutsu again, recalling Lord Third’s corpse alongside his son. E also found dead Suna scouts near our borders. It’s said that Lord Third’s corpse was unrecognizable.”

If Killer B felt hatred, he seems to hide it well enough as he glances at the being sitting at the edge, letting his feet dangle down.

“That was Jiraiya,” Kai smirks. “If you two fight again, he will kill you in a few seconds. Even I was surprised by his moves tonight.”

Killer B didn’t speak in rhymes and rap. Instead, he adds, “You killed him, not Jiraiya.”

“But you have a question, yes?” Kai glances at the man. “Go on, ask me. We both aren’t shy to kill each other if this conversation doesn’t go well, so it’s better we’re honest about certain things.”

“Why was Yugito in the Raikage’s office?” B cuts to the chase.

“The Raikage planned to hand over the Jinchuriki to the ones leaking the information. Atamui believed that, right? He thinks the Raikage feared another wave of information stolen and spread to the enemies.” Kai scoffs. “That’s a scare tactic, really. Those creatures did the same in Konoha. They only feign spreading the information of the civilian trade to increase the costs of Shinobi village in recalling their members and housing them.”

“Lord Third would never sell out Yugito!” Killer B clenches his fists.

“Is it because she’s valuable as a war asset or an individual?” Kai retorts. “No matter. He clearly felt it was a valuable exchange.”

Kai glances ahead.

“I’m not saying this because I enjoy tormenting you. However, I’m certain the Raikage planned to hand you over, too. Or rather, Hachibi.”

“I see,” Killer B whispers.

“You’re not angry,” Kai notes. “I wonder why. Did your loyalties not lie with the Raikage?”

“They do.”

“You also know I’m the one who killed Dodai, right? You don’t hate me for that?”

Killer B quietly sits beside Kai.

“I could ask you the same thing, Dragon. Don’t you hate me for all the Konoha shinobi I killed?”

“Nobody close to me died,” Kai sighs softly. “But my student’s father did. It made me sad seeing her like that. Yet, I don’t think I can hate others for that. Life is a fair game in our world.”

“Hmm,” Killer B grits his jaws. “What would it take to free bro from your cursed seal?”

“I can’t do that,” Kai replies flatly. “I won’t kill him either.”

“Hachibi said I’ll know what I need to know once we tap our fists,” Killer B shakes his head. “It’s funny. I know what I’ll feel once we do it. However, I don’t want to.”

“How about you tell me what that fist tapping is all about?” Kai smirks. “I don’t mind if you don’t want to bump fists with me. As long as we understand each other’s situation, it should be fine.”

“That situation being—you killing others, including my Brother, once I reveal the truth?”

“Since you seem to consider fist bumps some ethical rite,” Kai chuckles darkly, “Why don’t you bump my fist and find out?”

Killer B stands from his spot, barking, “Forget it, ya fool!” He flickers away as Kai’s smirk falls short.

‘The only loose end is Yugito.’

He couldn’t put a seal on her without exposing himself to her Jinchuriki, so he needed to take things slow with the girl.

‘It’s just one thing after another,’ Kai sighs. ‘Why did I even want to do all this?’

‘Oh, right. Tits.’

A just cause in his books.
