Of course, I've yet to add their perspective in the next chaps, but tldr is basically they feel they could take it because they were already chunins, went through enough missions, and a certain phrase (kai wanting to protect them to the point of sabotaging his mission) may have tickled their fancy a bit too much. That's why it wasn't Sakumo that got too much shit but those two themselves, and that too, from everyone lol

Which it's one thing for Kai to suffer as he pushed for the exam. It's a whole different thing to do that to them. Honestly, if Kai had left and Sakumo did what he was planning. He'd have been killed for it. No matter how much some people may like him. If Mito and Makoto's dad called for death, they'd not be able to stop them. Especially Mito. She could kill everyone in that room and no one could hope to stop her. That's a level of power they just don't have. So pissing off the person who holds the life of the village in their hand with the Kyuubi while hoping to use her relative as a slave as well. Yeah, she could just say fuck it and start killing them and giving an ultimatum about how things will go from then on. Since they already helped destroy her home through inaction. They really have no legs left to stand on if they truly anger her.

But it's done in a reasonably controlled environment with no permanent damage (except for mental trauma probably, which Tsunade can still heal) But the enemies outside konoha will always be worse. Then he could go "oops" and make her unable to have kids with how he drives a kunai into her guts. Sakumo really deserved at least that much. Kakashi was also a piece of shit in canon. So preventing his birth is always a good plan.
