The entire book takes place in a psychotic man's head which makes him an unreliable narrator; from the message on the ATM to a handheld pistol blowing up a cop car. What we do know, is that he's a ticking time bomb and he has resources.

They all just want to fit in and for a serial killer, that's Bateman's absolute prerogative. Bateman was not the only fake one. (Edit: It is unsure if Bateman committed the murders!)
