Chapter 134 [Vault]

[3rd POV]

After eating for a little while, Bucky had given the girl the supplies to take care of her…business, before returning to the camp. The two were sat on a log that Bucky had moved to make a somewhat comfortable chair, as Bucky gazed upon the little girl, before beginning. 

“So, Sophia, do you have any ideas on how far you walked away from your Mama?” Bucky asked. Knowing this would be helpful in finding the highway that Sophia had run away from, from there, it would be easy to find the Greene’s farm. If not, then she would have to find it the hard way, which would probably take a couple more days to find the farm, than otherwise. 

“I-I don’t know, Bucky, I’m sorry” Sophia said with an apologetic look, knowing that Bucky was going to have a hard time finding her Mama. 

Sighing, Bucky shook her head “Nothing to apologise for kid. We’ll find your mama either way, it’ll just take a bit longer without knowing where you came from. I know that they’re in the county, so it’ll just be a matter of finding where they’ve hunkered down in order to search for you” Bucky replied, calming the little girl before she started to cry. 

“Okay…do you really think you can find my Mama, Carl, and all the others?” Sophia asked as Bucky nodded. 

“I’m confident in finding them. A group as big as yours will leave clues, or will have to stay in a place large enough to house them, so they’ll be at a farm or something similar, as that’s all that is in the area. Meaning we’ve just gotta find a farm that’s not too far, and we’ll probably find them. If not, we’ll just have to find the highway and track them from there. Trust me, we’ll find them, I promise” Bucky replied, ruffling the kids hair as the girl pouted. 

“Don’t mess with my hair!” Sophia exclaimed with a huff, as Bucky snorted, before doing it again, the girl angrily pouting in response. Bucky just chuckled as the kid attempted to slap her hand away, only for her to move her hand out of the way every single time she tried. 

“Stop dodging!” Sophia said, as she tried to go after her hand, only for Bucky to grin and continue to move out of the way, only to blink as Sophia gained a mischievous glint, and went after her other hand, only to let out a small yelp of pain as she slapped the arm, a metallic feeling hit her arm as she looked down at Bucky’s left hand in confusion. 

“What-what’s wrong with your arm, Bucky?” Sophia asked, as Bucky stared her down, before letting out a small sigh. 

“Can you keep a secret for me kid?” Bucky asked as Sophia nodded, only to go wide eyed as she watched Bucky undo the long sleeve that hid her arm, showing off its dark metallic surface. 

“Whoa…” Sophia whispered, leaning forward and touching the arm, a look of awe on her face. 

“Pretty cool right? I lost my old arm a long time ago, and ended up replacing it with this one. I had some…friends that were able to make it for me. It’s the most advanced prosthetic on the planet” Bucky explained as Sophia nodded, her eyes practically sparkling at the sight of it. 

“You really are like a superhero! You’ve got a metal shield, a cool metal arm, and saved me!” Sophie exclaimed, as Bucky just smiled. 

“Thanks kid, but I’m not cool enough to be a hero” Bucky replied, as Sophie shook her. 

“You’re way cooler than those heroes in the comics me and Carl would read! And you’re actually real, they weren’t! And you’re my hero either way!” Sophie replied as Bucky stared at her, before just letting out a laugh.

“Thanks kid, that means a lot. Now, why don’t you go and get some rest? It’s late, and you’re gonna need your energy if you want to start looking for your Mama tomorrow” Bucky responded, as Sophia was ready to complain, only to stop at the mention of looking for Carol, understanding that she’d need her rest if she wanted to be able to do anything tomorrow. 

“...Okay, but you have to sleep too, Bucky” Sophia said, as Bucky nodded. 

“I’ll take power naps. Don’t worry about me, and get some rest, it’s been a long day” Bucky replied, as Sophia looked at her, before nodding slowly, as she moved to get into a comfortable position to sleep, using some blankets that Bucky had found in one of the houses she had gone through. 

“Night night Bucky” Sophia muttered with a yawn, as Bucky watched her slowly fall asleep, and softly muttered. 

“Night kid”

It was the next day, and the two were already on the road, Sophia situated on her shoulders as they walked alongside the road, ready to begin their adventure to find the Greene family farm. They had a pretty decent breakfast in order to fill up for the long journey, and had also found a nearby house that Bucky had scavenged for supplies, before they had officially begun to walk.

“How far is the farm, Bucky?” Sophia asked from her shoulders, as Bucky hummed. 

“10 miles or so. If we keep walking at this pace, without any breaks and looking through any shops or houses, we’ll be there in a few hours. But with the need to eat, scavenge, and walk out for any walkers? I’d say we’ll be there in a day at most. We gotta stay safe, afterall” Bucky responded, after a bit of thought. 

They could get there in a few hours, but she wanted to be safe, and she wanted to scavenge as much as she could, as supplies were a HUGE necessity in a world like this one, especially food, water, medical supplies, and most of all, guns and ammo. She had a decent supply of bullets, but no proper guns besides her glock. She needed a Rifle or AR, or something that would pack a bigger punch, and be more accurate.

“Okay, as long as we find them, it doesn’t matter how long it takes!” Sophia said with a small cheer, excited to see her mama after days of being separated, roughly at least. 

“Glad you’re excited kid” Bucky said with an amused smile, as she kept her eyes out for any walkers or even humans. She had yet to run into a human other than Sophia, but she doubted it’d stay that way. Either she’d run into the group, or she’d run into a less…welcoming party, she hoped it’d be the former.

“Do you think they’re all okay?” Sophia asked, even though she knew that Bucky didn’t know them, she hoped that the adult woman would have an idea. 

“You said that a horde had come through, but the officer, Rick, had saved and told you to hide, right?” Bucky asked as Sophia nodded. 

“Then they’re likely fine. He wouldn’t have done that if he wasn’t confident in coming back. Had those walkers not chased you away from your hiding spot, then I am sure he would have made his way back to get you” Bucky responded, as Sophia let out a sigh of relief, trusting in Bucky’s judgement in the matter. 

“Good! That means we just gotta make it to the farm where Mama will be waiting!” Sophia said, excited to see Carol, trusting that everyone was okay, safe, and looking for her, just like Bucky had said. 

Hearing this, Bucky smiled, as they continued to walk, hoping to find the Greene family farm, and bring Sophia back to her Mama, and her friends. As she continued to walk, Bucky had only one thought on her mind. 

‘...Onwards to the Greene family farm’

Next chapter will officially be her finding the farm, and meeting her love interest, Maggie. 

Not sure when the next chapter will come, as I am currently in my “Xianxia/Manhua/Cultivation” phase. Mostly ATG, but I am also planning on reading Battle Through the Heavens, Martial Peak, Soul Land, and Nanomachine (Nanomachine is more of a murim one though). 

Unique Gamer will likely be getting updated later. I’ll probably upload more vault chapters too, as I am in a writing mood right now.
