Chapter 146 [Vault]

[3rd POV]

After walking for most of that day, the two had found themselves in an old abandoned church, sitting on the main floor as they ate next to one another. Sophia was enjoying a can of beans, while Bucky was eating a can of peas. The walking had been…surprisingly uneventful besides a couple of walkers that Bucky had dealt with easily enough, with only humans being a real threat to her, unless it was a horde of walkers, then they were a huge problem. 

Sitting next to Sophia, she began to speak “So kid, what’re you gonna do once we find your mama?” Bucky asked, as Sophia turned to her, tilting her head slightly at the question, as she began to think it over, before replying with a smile. 

“I’ll give her a big hug!” Sophia exclaimed, as Bucky chuckled at the girl's excitement. The girl had grown to trust everything Bucky said, showing just how incredibly naive she was, but Bucky wasn’t evil, so it wasn’t a problem in this case. Bucky had also begun to teach Sophia about how people can and will lie, and she needs to learn to not trust everybody so quickly, especially when involving someone she didn’t know in the least. 

“And you’re gonna cry too” Bucky added with a teasing smirk, as Sophia glared. 

“Will not! I’m a big girl now, and now that I’ve been traveling with you, I’ve grown up!” Sophia replied fiercely, as Bucky laughed. 

“Kid, you’ll be grown up once you are half as tall as I am, which will never be. And even big girls cry when they see their mama after a long time, I’d cry too if I met my mama after something like all of this happened” Bucky replied, ruffling the girl's hair with a fond smile, the girl growing on her more and more by the day. 

She was like a cute little sister or perhaps niece. Either way, she was fond of the girl, and would kill to keep her safe. Something that would likely extend to her mother, and most of the group that she hoped to be able to join. And this was without even including the fact that her celebrity crush was a part of it, eventually at least. 

“You cry too?” Sophia asked in surprise, as she didn’t think that someone as strong as Bucky would cry at…well anything. 

“Everyone cries Sophia, everyone. And it’s okay to cry, ain’t nothing wrong with showing some emotion, as long as you can control that emotion in situations that need it” Bucky replied with a nod, as while she hadn’t cried in this life yet, she wouldn’t be surprised if it happened down the line. 

Hearing this, Sophia nodded slowly “Okay Bucky” Sophia replied in understanding. The girls was a bit surprised by the woman's response, but was happy that Bucky was being so upfront with her, and borderline teaching her in the past few days. 

In terms of teaching, this was mostly done by showing the girl what plants are poisonous and which ones are edible, whenever Bucky saw them. How to purify water that might be bad to drink normally, what foods are safe to eat even after this amount of time. She had even shown her how to hold a knife, when they had ran across their first walker while walking, as the girl would eventually need to know how to use one, in order to defend herself properly. 

It was all for the future really, as she wanted the girl to be able to survive on her own, should anything ever happen in the future. Especially once the prison and the Governor came around, then there was Negan, the Whisperers, the Wolves, Terminus, and so many future threats that would need to be dealt with down the road. 

But for now, Bucky smiled at the kid. 

“Finish up your meal kid, it’s about time we get to sleep. We got a long journey tomorrow, and it’s best we wake when the sun rises” Bucky said, as Sophia nodded rapidly, knowing that tomorrow was the day they would find the farm, and tomorrow as the day she would finally find her mama after days of not seeing her. 

Watching the girl as she scrambled about, finishing her meal and laying down onto the floor, pulling the sleeping bag over her, after they found it in a nearby hunting store, Bucky smiled as she had one thought on her mind. 

‘...Let’s hope everything goes well’

The next day, the two had already left the church, walking alongside the road, on the right side (East side in this case) of the road as it was where the farm would be at. They had been walking for around 30 minutes already, and hadn’t run into any walkers or anything of the sort, meaning they would likely be in the clear. 

Sophia had healed up enough in the past day, that she was able to walk alongside Bucky for a bit of time before she needed rest, which was spent in a piggyback ride, as Bucky was more than strong enough to hold the girl for long periods of time. 

As they walked, Bucky noticed a small mailbox in the distance, as a smile began to form on her face. 

Getting closer, she stopped as Sophia blinked in confusion, only for her eyes to widen as they read the words on the side “Greene Family Farm” 

“I-Is this-” “Yeah kid, this is the farm your mama should be at” Bucky responded with a warm smile, as the girl fought back tears, as she turned to the dirt pathway, the two looking at one another, and slowly beginning to walk on it. 

“Make sure to stay behind me, kid. They might mistake us for walkers” Bucky said, as Sophia nodded and moved behind Bucky as they got closer. Bucky noticed a rather iconic RV that was sat within a small group of trees not far from a large white farmhouse, tents within the small area as she smiled. 

“They’re here kid” Bucky said, noticing the figures off in the distance, they hadn’t noticed the two of them yet, but they likely would soon. 

Sophia fought back the cry of happiness that was threatening to escape her lips, as they got closer and closer, as Bucky made out the figures of various individuals, but none more so than a handful. 

An asian man with a baseball cap, Glenn Rhee. 

A scruffy man with dirt all over his form, Daryl Dixon. 

A man with shortly shaved hair, Shane Walsh. 

An older looking gray haired woman with short hair, and the mother of Sophia, Carol. 

A little boy with a sheriff's hat, Carl Grimes. 

A taller man that looked similar to Carl, Rick Grimes. 

And finally, the most attractive woman that Bucky had ever had the pleasure to lay her eyes upon, Maggie Greene, aka her celebrity crush from her past life. 

As she looked over the group, she also noticed some other figures, like T-Dog, Lori, Dale, and Andrea. 

As they grew closer, she noticed that none of them had noticed them, meaning they were likely too busy talking at the moment, and that talking seemed to be about finding Sophia, laying out some sort of map in order to find the general layout of where she could be. 

And finally, they soon grew to quite literally be only a little bit away from them, with Bucky inwardly not liking how awful their situational awareness was, as she looked at them over one more time, and finally spoke. 

“...Hello?”

I feel evil lol. 

If you can’t tell, I very much like Maggie (Doesn’t help that her actress is hot as hell), so she’ll be the one and only love interest for this fic. 

I might make another fic that is somewhat similar to my “The 100” fic with summoning others, but more limited in size and numbers. That fic would instead take place either after the deaths of Abraham (so like season 7) or would start in the beginning, but the MC wouldn’t interact with the main cast until a couple of years before the timeskip in season 9 ended. Love interest for that fic would be Rosita (the other character in TWD that I think is criminally underrated in terms of love interest potential). 

Another vault chapter might be coming tomorrow. If so, it’ll either be the ATG one, an invincible one that I thought of, a TWD one, or a brand new Cobra Kai one with Tory as the love interest. 

Next chapter, whenever it comes (within the next few days probably, if not tomorrow) will cover the meeting of Rick’s group and Bucky for the first time.
