Notes For The Underdark Job

Now that the adventure is over and the Chain have returned to Capital, it's safe to put these notes up for everyone!

Patrons got to see these each week before the session, but in each case the notes only covered the content I had prepped for that night. This is the first time they've all been collected in one post.

I normally buy an adventure and spend my time adapting it for my world and style, I think this is generally the best use of the DM's time. But for the Chain of Acheron I wanted to try running an entire campaign without using anyone else's adventure content and that means making it all up as I go.

That has pluses and minuses, which we'll talk about in the post-mortem video but in general I think it's working ok. Sometimes the players get a lot more or less done than I imagined, but that's always true. Sometimes an encounter obviously needed a second (or third, or fourth) draft.

My only goal with sharing all this is to give DM's an example of how I write notes, the actual unedited notes I use to run the session. Maybe they'll be of use to someone in planning their game.

Finally decided to read these and immediately got my mind blown by the lore reveals. What is the Black Iron Pact?! What did Duke Valletta do?! I love all the mysteries in Matt’s world. Can’t wait for Tales from Arcadia.

Thank you for your patronage! I try and use headers, bolding, and page breaks to make info easy to find. Page breaks help a lot because each page becomes a topic. But at the end of the day, I don't think there's any magic bullet solution. Rare is the session where I feel like I didn't forget anything. Best thing for that is just running the same adventure several times.

Seeing how you make your notes just made me a new Patreon. Thanks Matt! How do you use the notes during the game without getting bogged down in searching through too much paper? Or does the process of writing the notes help to keep it in your mind?
