ARCADIA 12

Hullo MCDM Patreons,

It’s James Introcaso with a heaping helping of ARCADIA 12 for you. This puppy has FOUR incredible articles to add to your game.

Cover Art by Martin Sobr

You may know Martin as the artist behind the amazing cover art for Beastheart and Monstrous Companions. He’s back, this time to deliver an evocative ARCADIA cover that takes you right into the heart of winter.

So Your Best Friend Is a Monster by Jessica Marcrum

You know how sometimes the characters make friends with a monster and instead of battling to the death, they decide to save the creature? Or you know how sometimes you can turn into a half-spider demon after, say, pissing off a certain eight-legged goddess? Well we got you covered! This article presents rules for uncursing driders, harpies, and medusas and turning them back into humanoids plus rollable tables for generating quick and dirty curses. The awesome art in this article comes from Elisa Serio.

Fey of the Shadowfell by Jonathan Connor Self

This article gives you new dark fey creatures to add to your game. When fey move to the Shadowfell, whimsy and passion can turn to pain and rage. These creatures make excellent villains and NPCs for your next adventure! Say hello to new hags and fomorians and unique creatures like the bogie and lubberkin. Dope illustrations in this article from Faizal Fikri and Zuzanna Wuzyk.

The Stuff of Nightmares by Carlos Cisco

Run one of these two nightmare encounters and your characters won’t take long rests for granted again! If they dare to stay at the Helm Street Inn, they’ll find the murderous Glass Ghost stalks their dreams. When a hypnagoug crosses their path, they’ll have to act fast or become the first victims of an aberration that uses their energy to tear into our reality. Gustavo Pelissari drew these delicious nightmares.

The Dimensions of Dowda by Robert J. Kuntz

You get a bonus article in this issue! We're presenting a magic item with adventure inside for the first edition of the game. Dowda's Lantern contains an entire secret dimension. Defeat the item's four challenges, and it's power is yours. A conversion guide for using this article with fifth edition rules is included. Maps and art in this issue come from our amazing staff artists and art outsource manager, Nick De Spain.

FAQs

Q: How long will I be able to download the ARCADIA PDF attached to this post?

A: Indefinitely. Though this wasn’t the case at launch, our policy has changed. All issues of ARCADIA remain attached to their launch posts. You can read more about it here.

Q: I know someone who wants to get a copy of ARCADIA, but they don't want to use Patreon. Is there somewhere else they can get it?

A: Definitely, and we understand! That's why, when we post the current issue of ARCADIA to Patreon, we add it to the MCDM Shop at the same time :D. On the MCDM Shop an issue of ARCADIA is $12.

Q: I want to submit an article for ARCADIA. How do I do that?

A: Thanks for your interest, but we currently don’t accept open submissions — you can check out this post to learn more about how we source articles for ARCADIA.

Q: What is this... an FAQ for ANTS? I have a question and it's not one of the ones listed here!

A: Oh no! D: If you need help with anything MCDM-related, email our support inbox (hello@mcdmproductions.com) and we'll respond as soon as we can. We're looking forward to reaching the point where we can bring on a dedicated support team member to help everyone lickety-split, but until we get there we try to check for new messages every week or two. We've got many tools at our disposal, so rest assured that when you hear back from us we will do everything we can to make sure you're taken care of! :)

I just did some catch-up reading starting w/ this issue & going back thru to 6 where I left off, & I gotta say, I'd love to have these in a physical copy. Are there any plans for this in the works? Whether as standalone paperbacks or a bound omnibus I'd pay good money for a book of Arcadia I could open up & flip through.

Jonathan Bartnik

Thanks! This is a fun issue and I loved the old school adventure.

Jeffrey MacLeod

Just read this issue. Love it. Also love the glass ghost encounter. My players just killed a sand speaker shopkeep and this will let me introduce a recurring villain in a way that feels organic.

George Fagan

I think they're following the tradition of Dragon Magazine, which did seq numbering. I mean, Matt did say that it was the inspiration for doing arcadia.

Tealus

Poof! Time machine when I hit that section.

Dundough Breadbox

This is by far the best issue yet, really knocked it out of the park this month

keith brown

Since this is a periodical why not adopt the Volume X, Issue Y standard? I thought this would be Volume 2, Issue 1.

ZorkFox

This is looking dope. Ready to read and very much enjoy. Thanks Arcadia team!

Ok, so what's awesome about this issue is, it includes an old school style dungeon. Old school dungeons weren't just maps or whatnot. It was about creating a story, and the dungeon was part of the story. Now, I never played AD&D2. But I got super into the Planescape AD&D2 setting, after I played the *Planescape: Torment* video game. And I own most, if not all, of the PDFs available of all the old Planescape content. Planescape was an interesting setting, because it was about taking the Planes that Gary Gygax created and making them feel real. The setting creators did a fantastic job! The Planes as we know them today, in modern D&D (and even in Pathfinder or many other tabletop games/settings), are the creation of the Planescape writers from the late '80s/early '90s. In fact, I'm so in love with Planescape, I'll admit, that I am creating my own custom Planes-based setting which uses Pathfinder's "The Great Beyond" (see here: https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/The_Great_Beyond,_A_Guide_to_the_Multiverse ), adding my own city hub to it called "Labyrinth, The Nexus", and adding many more Planar locations and demiplanes and so on. I'm using Planescape modules and sourcebooks as inspiration for much of this, but adapting to it fit my Planar setting. That's what I love to do, to get ideas from other sources, twist them, mold them, make them something else, and put them in my custom Planar setting called "Labyrinth of the Planes". Anyway, the point I'm getting at is, from a guy in his '30s, who never played back in the '80s and '90s, seeing how these old books, these old modules, this article by Robert J. Kuntz presents: that it's a story of a world, an encyclopedia, as Matt himself put it, it's just wonderful. It sparks my own creativity, and lets me put my players into unique and interesting situations within the stories that we're crafting together, myself as the GM and my players with their wonderful characters. So, it was really, really cool to see Mr. Kuntz old style dungeon article in this issue of Arcadia, to see Ms. Marcrum's article on monsters, Mr. Self's article on an alternative view of the Fey and the Shadowfell, and Mr. Cisco's article on invading character's dreams. This stuff is why I'm a patron of MCDM Productions, for REAL JUICE that sparks my personal creativity! The real juice includes, by the way, the amazing artwork from the many talented artists so far! Thank you, Arcadia and MCDM Productions, for providing the real juice!

Cover is awesome. Like others have said, Martin has a very Frazetta-like quality to his art that is just fantastic.
