I was thinking about this episode. There are so many episodes where the parents go clean off the rails. I checked it out. Go lookup Joss Whedon’s bio. Specifically the period before he was 25. Parents divorced at 9 two older brothers and two step brothers. Feeling odd etc.. it’s not surprising. He went to a private school in NY and all he would have to do is look around to find a Xander with no visible parents. Willow’s mum, completely self absorbed treating her child like a PhD thesis. Cordy? In a NY private school? Everywhere.. Giles .. everyone would play out in those environments. His own mum (Joyce) oblivious to him. His real father 1/2 sensible but far away. Joss spent his childhood feeling completely displaced and unwanted. I’m gonna make a huge leap. He was so marginalized he invented Buffy as a companion / sibling. He can throw all his own bad experiences into the show and watch her fix them. This makes me think that a lot of this commentary is less about what is being ignored as much as that it is being ignored. It’s always the kids that are aware of it, always the parents that are oblivious. Which makes perfect sense for his audience. That exactly what many kids feel. Wow..l really need Willows mum to figure out the flashes of misogyny. Annoyed that there was no real Buffy? As to the demons that create chaos. There is a limit to the amount of evil that can happen if just one person / demon is doing it. There is almost an unlimited amount of evil that can be done if one person influences others. I was waiting for that ‘one day you’ll wake up in a coma’ line. That and ‘did I get it’ Lovely reaction of course. You make me smile no matter what craziness is going on. 🤗
