It’s only briefly mentioned in the show, but in the manga it’s made explicit that there are Vampires that become addicted to the pleasure of drinking blood, and it can drive them as crazy as it is Jeanne in extreme cases. But they aren’t curse bearers. So it’s possible the Naenia appearance was a red herring and Jeanne is actually just addicted to blood.( I doubt it, we saw the shadow monster with jeanne at her lowest moment, 90% sure she’s a curse bearer.) they don’t say why he doesn’t just check but i it’s possible that looking without permission could do irreparable harm to the vampire.( . Or because it’s slowly killing him, he doesn’t want to use the book until he’s sure so he doesn’t hurt himself without helping her.)
