Vlog: YouTube as a Personal Profession and Bullshit Machine

It's been a year since I decided I was going to do this as a full-time job!  In this vlog, I talk about how that decision came about, what's changed now that this is a job and not a hobby (Good!) and stuff about YouTube that's changing as a whole (Bad Bad BAD).  Enjoy!

Way I see it all these internet communities have a lifespan. Then something else comes along. If you look at Patreons terms of service it's a pretty shakey platform compared to, say Paypal, in terms of them cutting you off with little recourse. I think if you're making evergreen content then hopefully you can take that with you and have security in that respect. But I notice a lot of content providers now are going back to mailing lists to try and get a direct line to their audience instead of relying on external gatekeepers. It's something to keep in mind and maybe start building a list now to prepare for any future transition or just improve your reach. A tweet might be read by a couple of percent of your followership. Same with a Facebook post. Email gets at least opened by most people if you use it correctly and you aren't at the mercy of some algorthm, other than Gmail's filtering of course.

Thanks, good vlog. Just discovered your channel and went to Patreon. Great to see work from people like you. I was raised on the Speccy back in Iceland in the 80's and it's lovely to see people focus on the british scene since because that is what I grew up on, with all the weird games and magazines. I would never have had the long career in video games myself without the speccy :)
