Knowing he truly wants to be unimportant makes it a bit than I’d thought.

In the books it's a lot clearer that he doesn't want to get involved with Olivia and Angelica, he's just too nice to refuse to help them when they need help. He doesn't want to get noticed, or promoted. It's not that he feels he's unworthy of the girls, he just doesn't want to end up with either Olivia or Angelica or both. He tries to act like a jerk and villian to push them away, but has to keep coming to the rescue because he's too nice to leave them hanging. He literally wants to fade back into the mob character life, get an nice unimportant mob character wife, and live in a small unimportant plot of land somewhere with minimal responsibilities. The anime just makes him seem dense and clueless. I don't know if it's a bad translation from the anime or if they've changed his motivations intentionally.
