Ascendance of a Bookworm Ep. 36 Reaction [FULL]

HUGE REVEALS!

Ascendance of a Bookworm Ep. 36 Reaction [FULL]

Comments

I'm a little late to this show and it's taken me a while because the show was a little too slow for me at some points which made me stop watching and only continued after a couple of weeks have passed. I overall enjoyed the show but there is one major point that annoyed me throughout the show and that is the mains behaviour. I dont know if there is an explanation for this in the LN but it always annoyed me that she was so ignorant about some things, she always behaved like a child even though she was an adult. Also, at times it felt like the author was picking and choosing which of Main's old memorys/knowledge were actually being applied to her. For example, Main knew who to behave when doing business and what to mention or discuss before making a deal, but on the other side she was so naive about the dangers and people with possibly bad motives. In my opinion, Main should have been much more mature and knowledgeable, because I think it is safe to assume that she did not just read dramas or love storys, but rather history, biographies, music, religion or books that give you general knowledge about the world, people and society. And finally, the last thought I had in the last 10 minutes of the last EP was: "Did all this happen just so Main could read books? I don't know if I'm missing something, but did all the bad things that happened to her and her family just happen because she wanted to read some books?

I know I'm a little late to the party, lol, but I really love this show. I was digging through your back catalog and was excited to see you covered this. I just rewatched it a few months ago, but it's so good! I heard that they announced a new season, maybe 2025? I'm so excited for it! I want to see the noble academy and learn more about how she will turn this town on its head. Thanks for the react! I enjoyed it.

Yeah, that father daughter moment near the end was a little gross. Why would you even dream of your daughter saying something like that to you? I mean, What in the actual fuck? I'm wondering if that's some cultural thing that didn't translate well or what. Other than that, It was tear jerkingly beautiful. This series has done a wonderful job of making me flip between seething with rage and tearing up uncontrollably.

i knew his goofly ass was the lord

i dont think that the noble sneaked into the city, sent kidnappers and tried to take myne just because ferdinand was not being seen for few hours. as he said himself, "i'd annunced that i was away". he just went hiding until myne was in a pinch. probably in his hidden room where others cant go. but i see what you mean. ferdinand was not really bothered in the slightest when he told myne she was in deep shit. like it was all calculated. it was only when he saw his brothers pendant that he showed a reaction. like things were not going as planned. He also likes to foreshadow. he talked to myne about adoption, myne rejected the notion. and then he is suddenly missing and is the vital piece in creating a situation where myne needs to be adopted. i think i have seen the same pattern before but i cant remember everything atm <3

Sven, there's official translation. I don't remember who translated 1st volumes, but I assume it was J Novel club. Last month the light novel series was actually on a catch up mode, so one could've read all translated volumes on their website for only $4.50 . It was the same as their monthly fee to read ongoing translations of all of their manga and light novels, including the Bookworm. Ascendance of a Bookworm been translated weekly in parts and posted on their website. Lately it's been like this: 1 book would be divided into 8 parts, each part translated weekly (3 chapters worth or so). They're up to book #18 now, I think. I keep up with weekly translation at this point for a while now. Series are amazing. "Side stories" which been compiled into actual books are also really good and are based on main plot line, but as told from other char perspective which at the same time contributes greatly to their character development and adds more to the main plot line. So all in all, you have... 1) Ascendance of a Bookworm Web Novel (haven't read, don't know much about it. But I hear it's like a backbone, main plot lines, older work) 2) Ascendance of a Bookworm Light Novel ( main franchise ) 3) Ascendance of a Bookworm Official Fanbook (2 volumes so far translated, I think) 4) Ascendance of a Bookworm Royal Academy Stories First Year (almost translated. Meant to be read after... Part 4, volume 3, I think, so after 13th or 14th book from the beginning. The division into "Parts" in this novel series is a bit confusing, but each part separates the story into major life periods around Rozemyne. As mentioned earlier. Everything pre "Part 3" was animated, well, sort of. A lot of things were skipped. Part 3 has 5 volumes (books) Part 4 has 7 volumes (books) translated with 8th currently being translated. (Total of 9) Part 5 in original Japanese has like 7+ volumes already as well.

Kot Bajun

where can i read this or does it have an officel translation?

Sven Hegenbart

Honestly… maybe

JoeFreshest

😭😭

JoeFreshest

I guess they did skip a lot, maybe I’ll end up reading it though.

JoeFreshest

Yeah I think the fact that she could say good bye was really important.

JoeFreshest

I guess I’ll get that depth when I read it.

JoeFreshest

Honestly I might also read it 🤔🤔🤔

JoeFreshest

I’m saying… I actually might need to

JoeFreshest

I mean no his retainer told Fran he was out cause that's what he was. He was out in his hidden room. He got told to say he wasnt available. If someone comes looking for you and your taking a shit they may wait till your done. But if someone comes looking for you and they get told your not there you're less likely to wait around. See what I mean? Arno is also a massive bellend to Fran for...reasons I dont want to spoil anything if you know you know. So he took the order literally.

Bryce Jackson

Ok cool!

JoeFreshest

awww 😭 I dont know if I have ever cried while reading but 🤞 one day I hope I do.

JoeFreshest

🤔🤔 Yeah I get his ranking now. I forgot about this civil war though. I might need to actually read this series at some point

JoeFreshest

I might have to do that.

JoeFreshest

Ok, makes sense. I was thinking he was in charge of his own kingdom, but I see that what he is in charge of is still part of a greater kingdom as a whole.

JoeFreshest

Damn. That's a lot of reading.

JoeFreshest

i dont think ferdinand is evil. but he knew for sure that nobles would try to take myne if he and the lord was gone at the same time. and his retainers knew where he was hiding (see how mynes retainer ask the freckled retainer why he was not informed where Ferdinand was). this heavily implies that ferdinand created this situation purposefully and made sure his ex retainer dident know, as his ex retainer is loyal to both myne and ferdinand instead of just him. he might not have known about the necklace but i dont think he would do this without a plan of sorts. and we cant deny the chance he faked surprise.

Orbmaniac

I love how this series builds it world. I like to compare it to boxes. The first box is her home and we get introduced to the family and how they live. The second box adds a part of the lower city to it. Because she begins to commute to the gate. After a while this opens up to the forest outside the city. The third box opens up when she gets introduced to Benno, because after that pretty much the whole lower city gets added to it. The fourth box is when she goes to the temple and becomes an apprentice shrine maiden. The fifth and last box for now, adds the noble quarters to it. Only after 36 episodes Main gets to experience the whole of her birth city, so far she experienced only half of the city. Each box opens up the world around our MC and introduces us to new facts and way of lifes we never saw before. This series takes it time to develop characters, relationships and the world around her. Any complicated situations that happen later on, do not need to be explained much. Because we followed Mains life from the very ground up. Some might see this as a pacing problem or a slow series, but i love it

Derper Octinger

Honestly well worth it I'd recommend starting at the beginning or finding a light novel analysis on yt if you would rather spend a couple of hours listening or if you wanna read it.

Bryce Jackson

damn time to read the books

Sven Hegenbart

Man, I'm such a crybaby lmao. This legit will be the first series that makes me want to try and read ahead. I haven't felt this strongly about a series in a long time.

wahninomae

Also why/how come Freida ended up near Damien bedridden, etc. I really hoped her side of the story would've been covered, but again, how lousy the Blessing was done to show which people in particular it actually targeted, doubt it'll be important for anime only, hence low prio to be animated even as an OVA. Because, well, the blessing didn't hit everyone present with her in the room let's say although in anime there's no way to tell :/

Kot Bajun

hm, would it be counting as a spoiler, if we were to share the map of Yurgenschmidt on Discord? I mean it doesn't reveal more than was already mentioned in the anime (besides the names of the other duchys and where they are located).

Fusssel

could be or just a new season.

Fusssel

Maybe in OVA's? Like with the 2 between Season 1 and Season 2

Bryce Jackson

He does some shady stuff cause he enjoys being the puppet master in a way to his schemes. However he didn't know Sylv gave myne the necklace. It came as a genuine shock she had such a thing. He was in his hidden room cause that is where nobles go to open up emotionally. No one else is ment to go into the rooms barring servants to clean and in Ferd's case Myne but since she can't get a room of her own (will be explained why if theres another season) He allows her to use his to vent and release any pent up emotions. He came out of his office because he heard all the commotion otherwise he'd of just went back to work after leaving his hidden room. Myne was always going to have to become a noble. He was far kinder and respectful than he needed to be. Look at Count Bindewald. All he needed was Myne's blood and she would of been his slave forever. Yet Ferd gave her time to spend with her family. Gave her a choice. Books or family? She couldn't have both as he knew that would put her family in danger against the nobles. He is a very clever and able to control to a certain extent how his plans with go. However with Myne. He does care.

Bryce Jackson

Its a shame the studios budget only allowed 10 episodes, an extra 2 would have added so much more that was taken out

Knighthammer

Man I can only imagine how much having to say good bye to two mothers has to be. At least she got to say her goodbyes to her mom and dad here. She lost her mom from Japan and never got to say goodbye.

vardic d

they totally skipped over the whole funeral, why the name is now Rozemyne, the blessing and a few minor details. If they go for a next season, I guess some things will be explained, that should have been this episode. But that would most likely been to much for 24 minutes.

Fusssel

Yup. I concur. The only thing I'll add is that if more would be made into anime, there's a lot of ground, events and development to cover before she turns old enough (10) to even be eligible to enroll at the Royal Academy. :nods: Easily 20 episodes worth, if not more. Also, a piece of trivia about persons age in this world. Pure trivia that nearly impossible to pick up on from the main story, even in light novel. A year in that world is not 365 +/- 1 day. A year is 420 days long. So people's ages are skewed compared to real time outside of Bookworm.

Kot Bajun

I still cried even though I've already read the novel three times. I cry every time!

Untolddead Writing Webnovels

man Ferdinand is so sus, every few episodes he does some shady stuff that helps him but creates issues for myne, recently everything keept happening in a way that pushes myne into this contract. like in this episode where everyone thought that Ferdinand was gone, yet he was just hiding, only to reveal himself when myne had gotten into deep trouble and had to agree to the adoption. of course Ferdinand knew that this was gonna happen if he plays hide and seek. i swear he just used myne as a tool to get rid of his superior and to gift his brother a powerful mage

Orbmaniac

As for the books, this season finishes Part 2. So you can read the first seven volumes without spoilers.

John

Was going to post this, the ambiguity of using "lord" and "domain" makes the anime hard to follow at times. Aub means Archduke in this world.

John

when i read this scene i had the ugly choking tears

Saskatchatoon24

I'd strongly recommend you to read the novel's ending, it's Part 2 Volume 4, the following novel volume is Part 3 Volume 1. While I did like the anime's ending and how it was adapted. I feel like 70% of the story in this chapter was left out. The blessing she did at the end was an almost impossible blessing. I know you love the religion worldbuilding so you'd love the books. The reason for the difficulty of this blessing was because she prayed to all the gods and it is known that among the eternal five, Ewigeliebe is hated by his brother and sisters, because every year he kidnaps Geduldh and traps her in ice (basically causing winter in the lore) So praying to the Supreme Gods and the Eternal Five almost always causes the blessing to fail. If you want to read the novels and don't know where to start lemme give you a quick summary so you don't miss anything when choosing. Part 1 The Daughter of a Soldier Vol 1: From when she was reborn until after the first meeting between her and Lutz with Benno. Vol 2: From when Mayne starts the paper making practice until when she collapses while in a meeting with Benno and has to be taken to Frieda (the granddaughter of the guildmaster) for the magic tool. Vol 3: From when she wakes up in Frieda's house until she's taken in by the temple as a blue robe priestess apprentice. Part 2 Apprentice Shrine Maiden Vol 1: From when Mayne joins the temple and is presented to her attendants, to when Mayne makes Ferdinand get involved with Lutz and his family and they all get summoned to the temple to discuss Lutz getting adopted by Benno. Vol 2: From when the misunderstanding with Lutz and his family solves until the tromble extermination and subsequent healing ritual, in which Mayne gets hurt by Shikikōza (or Shikza in the official translation) This part ends with Ferdinand using the magic tool to peer into Mayne's memories and it is simply amazing. Vol 3: From when Ferdinand asks Karstedt to eventually adopt Mayne to when Kamil is born. Vol 4: From when Dirk is left in the orphanage until when Mayne is adopted and has to say goodbye to her commoner family. Part 3: Adopted Daughter of the Archduke From this forward, it hasn't been animated yet.

Kari

The light novel translation is somewhat clearer in the status hierarchy. Here Lord is translated as Archduke, while domain is translated as Duchy. So Sylvester is the Archduke of the Duchy of Ehrenfest. With the City of Ehrenfest being the capital. So Sylvester was away on what's called the Archduke Conference, which is a as the name implies a conference between the Archdukes of the different duchies in the country they live in. From season 1 we also know that there was a recent civil war in the country where Ehrenfest stayed neutral.

IronDestiny

By the way if you want a real world comparaison silveste is like a gouvernor of a state of the united state so is not in the top of the kingdom he just the lord of a state he have a lot of power like he could do law and kill people if he want in his region but still have people above him

azope

Well, finally, hello there, Rozemyne. R.I.P. Myne. But seriously, so many things omitted. Season 4, maybe? Hehe. But again, seeing how season 3 was animated, more so starting from kidnapping of Myne/her sister and ending with the Blessing, things which would go into season 4, like Hasse and all. I wouldn't really look forward to it as most epic things I'd look forward to (in Hasse story) would be simplified too much. Will talk more about the ending here later. P.s. Just read the light novel, man, heh

Kot Bajun
