These Patreon service fees.

Hey y'all. I'm sure this isn't the first time you've seen a post like this today, but I felt it important to give my own thoughts about the changes to Patreon fee.

Needless to say...well, it sucks. Really badly. Especially for anyone who likes to pledge $1-2 dollars over a multiple amount of people - that's how I tend to use most of my pledging money, so I know how shit this feels myself 'cause my fees are going to go up.

Patreon are making out as if this is of great benefit to the creator when it so obviously isn't, and is only of benefit to themselves and perhaps the small percentage of creators who make tons of dosh on here and are too blind to the big negatives that this change brings about. It's pretty damn simple, isn't it? How enticing is a pledge when you flat out know that you are paying money that DOESN'T go to the person you're pledging to?

More than the short term effects of people dropping pledges, this is a stifler to the growth of a channel in the long term - just one that goes along with the constant unappealing redesigns and what have you. I, along with the high majority of other creators, was perfectly happy to pay those fees myself. This is an utter garbage move on Patreon's court, and I hope that the negative feedback they are receiving on this is enough to make them see sense (I doubt it).

As for what this means with regards to this Patreon? Obviously I have to work with this shit too. A few people have left explicitly because of this change, and it's understandable when you consider the nature of this hike. All I can say is that I will continue to endeavour to make this Patreon as worthy as possible for all tiers, from low to high - early access, the ability to ask questions and access to Patreon exclusive livestreams (the next one of which is tomorrow, at last) will forever be open to all tiers.

And so it's important to redouble efforts both against the hapdash nature of this decision and for the main people who are getting shafted That being all y'all. This is a bad move on Patreon's part, and I dare say that if it doesn't get fixed soonish, the month of February (when Drip, Kickstarter's version of Patreon goes public) will be quite a lousy month for them indeed. Patreon may be the first, but that sure doesn't guarantee that it's the best.

All the best and much love,

-Kim

I'm going to be setting up a PayPal.Me link a la Techmoan in the next couple of days, so keep a lookout!

For the moment I've had to pause all my pledges. Do you have an alternative way of sending you money? Paypal, maybe? Techmoan has a way to send him money via Paypal, I was wondering if you were planning on doing something similar? I'd rather send you the money directly anyway.

Jeez, typical of the site to pull something like this after I already had to lower my pledge... I’ve put my pledge on pause for the month- can’t really be doing with the price hike right after Xmas season- and I sincerely apologise for that. Hopefully, the negative feedback will convince Patreon to reverse the changes before they go ahead.
