I like that they show more real aspects of relationships, in this one you see where some of Senpais mannerisms have rubbed off on Nagatoro. Specifically when he says that aside and always does a set aside hand motion, initially it was to grief him on it but now is second nature.

They know her and she seems to be pretty popular so when they noticed she was there to defend him they kinda got cold feet with the bullying. That's why they seemed so intimidated. Nagatoro's scary aura obviously added to the intimidation but I'm pretty sure they would've backed off in a similar way with any other popular girl they knew.
