The school didn't consider grading based on multi-variable speed because aside from Tatsuya, no one else can do the level of calculation that he is doing. There is a reason why he can do so that will be revealed much later, but the point is that the school didn't evaluate based on that category not because they are trying to exclude ppl, they just never encountered any magician who can do what Tatsuya can do so it didn't make sense to evaluate based on that category when everyone aside from Tatsuya would suck at it. Since you mentioned the Japanese thing, the Ten Master clans have a last name that always starts with a number between 1 to 10. In Japanese, from 1 to 10, this is: Ichi (一) Futatsu (二) Mitsu (三) Yotsu (四) Itsu (五) Mutsu (六) Nana (七) (can be read in various ways such as Sae from Saegusa) Yatsu (八) Ku (九) Juu (十) So if you encounter anyone with the last name starting with the above, they are likely a member of the ten master clan, although things get more complicated later on, but that's for later. So far we know the Yotsuba clan which was just dropped at the end of this episode, Saegusa (written Nanakusa (七草), but read as Saegusa as she herself said in episode 1), and Juumonji. Shiba (司波) doesn't use the kanji for four above, but one of the readings of 4 in japanese is Shi, so that's also kind of interesting. Tatsuya also mentioned Chiba in the first ep (千) which is 1000, but we don't know how that plays into the system so far up to this ep.

I echo the sentiment that I appreciate that it's not lazy when explaining the magic system versus all the other anime. The only series that I can think of that elaborates their power system sufficiently is HXH.

Miyuki obsesiion with her brother will make sense later but for me she is over the board. The anime makes a good jop adaptom thr main plot but cuts out side character interactions like with the scene of Erika you would have learned a few things about her but the anime only showed the fan service scene

I didn't hate my time watching it, but a vast majority of the show felt like it was just talking jargon *at* me which makes it feel very clinical and somewhat joyless. It all connects quite nicely and I don't think I could bring myself to call it bad, but...boring, definitely.

It has a rigorous setting to make everything you feel weird reasonable, but when the anime explaining the settings, it gonna makes you feel boring and confuse. Also it has some elements which are not very kind to western viewers such as all the "Numbers" Kanji game in the show.

Everything is going to get answer but just hold out a bit more and they will start to slowly give answers. I can’t say anymore cuz I’m really trying to refrain from spoiling. Also I forgot how good this show is at world building and introducing the characters.

This episode reveals that the "Numbers" being referred to are the 10 great families. And there are valid reasons for all the weird stuff happening. Be assured that questions will be answered during the show (I was surprised at how much hidden information is packed in and resolved in just one season). This is not a show that leaves half the plot unresolved at the end. You will probably want more at the end, but it was made to stand on it's own.

There's a lot behind the scenes that will slowly be revealed as the show progresses. Don't let it bother you in the early episodes, and eventually things will start making sense.
