One thing cut from this episode is that when Rentarou is saying he "can't force her to talk," Shizuka is saying in her mind, "Speak. SPEAK!" As for trying, there are a few moments, but not many.

2023-10-22 19:25:20 +0000 UTCIf you're worried about Shizuka being a character that exists to fill a trope, you can rest easy. The manga sort-of makes fun of that sentiment calling her her a "small animal needing protection" in semi-sarcastic ways and she will grow into her own character fully next episode. She is her own character with her own motivations, and the comedy of the next chapter shows it well. I was excited for this adaptation because of the chapter AFTER the first 3-4 girlfriends are introduced, and the anime is taking its time. This has so far been about 1 chapter for each episode, and many details are added in the episodes to spread it out a bit. I think once Kusuri is brought in, most people will see what makes this series so brilliant. The manga gets WILD later on, which is probably why some people don't see what makes it great, because the best parts are later (although judging from the OP, one of the best arcs in the entire manga will probably be this season). Edit: KIND OF SPOILER: The dramatic stuff is expanded later on.

2023-10-22 18:58:26 +0000 UTCYeah the usual Manga pattern is There will be a few chapters of group shenanigans, then a new girl, then a chapter of the new girl meeting with the existing girlfriends; and then back to shenanigans and repeating the cycle. So on average we basically get a new girl every 5 or 6 chapters; it's pretty fun. And based on rereading the manga, i can easily see them doing a total of seven or even eight of the girls in this first season, since it's apparently a two cour I think? Dunno. All depends on how they handle this first half.

I was enjoying this show on episode 2 when it focused more on comedy but so far I am not found of the drama/emotional moments. I just feel this entire episodes arc I'd rather have seen as its own story in multiple episodes in a different show. Basically This show feels like its trying to have its cake and eat it to, It takes itself too seriously to be some dumb fun but I also can't take it seriously enough to give a shit about the emotional moments. I'm also not fond of what they did with Shizuka's problem, felt like enabling something she needs to overcome and then made anyone that thinks she should overcome it an asshole by having a "bad parent" strawman. The episode felt emotionally manipulative. I just kinda felt Shizuku existed simply to be protected and felt more like a pet than an equal partner, the other two girls I'm not the biggest fans of but I think they hold their own and add value to the relationship. I hope Shizuka in a future episode gets a moment to shine in some way and not just be a damsel for Rentarou to save but based off the ending and resolution of her "speech problem" I am not holding my breathe. I heard from Manga readers most of the storybook scenes were anime original and tbh I enjoyed those more than the A plot of this episode. I hope the next girl (Who based on pausing the OP to read her letter is an intelligent beauty/math nerd I guess.) is more interesting and Rentarou has a harder time winning her over. I'll stick around for the whole season, because its an entertaining enough show, but I'm so far not seeing what made Manga readers lose their minds when this adaptation was announced.
