The way Jinshi was acting when he heard Maomao's backstory definitely seemed like he was someone up high enough in their hierarchy that he would feel the need to apologize for not being able to "police" those criminals. Jinshi seems to be the type of character who is probably more important than what we're initially led to believe, yet he prefers to live his life a bit more carefree instead of distancing himself from people.

2023-11-05 04:38:46 +0000 UTCAt first I thought Jinshi was a eunuch but that due to anime pretty boy logic they'd ignore the biological reality of being one, but since this anime is doing a good job with its medical knowledge of the times that would be an odd thing to overlook. So maybe he is the Emperor's brother, nephew, or some kind of relative and that's why he has the authority and privledge of being in charge without being a eunuch. Although the alternative is he was made into a Eunuch into his adult life after puberty but if that was the case I think the show would point it out. BTW freckles back then were seen as less attractive due to it being a sign of less wealth and being well off, basically back then poor pheasants had to work all day in the field and thus would have darker skin/freckles. While rich well off people could afford to stay indoors. Nowadays its the opposite because having a tan and being fit means you don't work a soul crushing 9-5 cubicle office job.

I did some research on eunuchs back when Raven of the Inner Palace aired, and found out that eunuchs should on avg look like the doctor dude (although he's prolly too chubby, but since he's the doctor he doesn't do anywhere nearly as much physical labor as the generic eunuchs, so maybe Jinshi should look more like the other eunuchs do, so basically less chubby versions of the doctor, biomass wise), in that due to loss of testosterone generation cuz of ball & pp cutting (well only the ball cutting matters I suppose, at least for testo), your muscles lose all the definition (female athletes w/ defined muscles can only get those after using steroids & testosterone injection shit FYI, naturally it's impossible for them to get visual muscle definition no matter how much weights they lift, it will simply stay as hidden muscles inside the biomass essentially) and your facial features become pudgy/childer like (which makes sense I guess). So Jinshi must thus not be an eunuch if he has the testosterone generation to have that highly cut muscles visuals wise
