I've been thinking that the woman wearing white in the OP is actually her mom. The hair is slightly different and she hugs Maomao at the end of the sequence before disappearing.

2023-12-12 23:08:22 +0000 UTCI think Maomao is the red herring, I think Jinshi is the current emperors son, but was raised as his brother due to the other child dying at childbirth and Maomao's "father" (whom can't be her actual father as he was a eunuch at the inner palace at the time and she mentions that, so she probably knows that already), was expelled due to failing to save the then emperors child.

2023-12-10 12:38:38 +0000 UTCWell I suppose we pretty much know for certain that Maomao's father is not her actually biological father - if he was the doctor in the inner Palace around the time/before Maomao was born - he would have been a eunuch, and maomao even refers to him at the end of the episode as that - so its almost as if she knows he isn't a biological father, but instead her father in the sense that he raised her. My money due to his age is grandfather.

2023-12-10 00:59:21 +0000 UTCI think the most likely scenario, at least in my mind is that Maomao is the child of the former emperor, making her the current emperor's sister. If we take the given knowledge that the emperor had a son with concubine Ah-Duo, and that he has a brother the same age that that child would be, at face value, it makes the most sense that his son, Jinshi, was raised as his brother in order to cover up the kidnapping/disappearance of his sibling, who would be Maomao. This would make Maomao finding concubine Ah-Duo familiar make sense since she would be Jinshi's mother. Maomao could be the emperor's daughter, but that situation seems a lot more complicated, and I don't see the logic behind changing the gender of a dead infant to male. Of course this would mean Maomao would be Jinshi's aunt, and while this theoretically could turn into incest, I doubt it's going to go that way, so I think it's likely there's a red herring mixed in somewhere.
