I'm sure the situation is pretty much par for the course with Maomao... she's thinking one thing while Jinshi is thinking something else. In this case, maybe Maomao's thought process was just to be bought out to be able to work at the Rear Palace again. As for Jinshi... well... I don't think even he knows exactly what he's doing sometimes. He clearly has feelings for her, but can't seem to know exactly what to do with said feelings. After all, despite how mature Jinshi looks, the show does keep reminding us that he's still pretty young as well... probably around the same age as Maomao (17-20 yrs old perhaps).
