Not sure if someone's really told you by now, but in Japan a woman who's in her late 20's to 30 or so is considered to be an old maid by a decent chunk of the population if she's not married by then. That being said, it's just part of the population and it's changed quite a bit in the past decade (with the rapidly growing amount of both men and women who have never been in any relationship ever). In some Asian countries it hasn't really changed as much though. In China women age 27+ and single are called leftover women and it's only a small chunk of the female population who is still single by then. Since it's just a small part of the population, that's basically what happens. It was no different here in the west at some point and it changed because it became normalized with a growing chunk of the population still being single at age. And that's also why it has been changing in Japan, though that change is far more recent. I think when Railgun first came out it was actually still fairly common to think that way.
