2023-11-11 16:27:07 +0000 UTCOkay. So. This has been a misconception for a while now, so I'll go ahead and explain why Luffy can't "just reach farther." There's some misunderstandings about how his ability works. (And no, I'm not spoiling anything-- just explaining based on what we've seen him do.) Luffy's ability to stretch is based on momentum. He can only stretch by "throwing" his arm in a direction, which is why attacks like Bazooka require a run-up as he throws his arms back, and why Pistol has him throwing his arm backwards, first. Bullet, actually, is different from Pistol in that he advances like Bazooka, before throwing a punch more like Pistol. So, the only way for him to "just stretch and grab something" is for him to have the freedom of movement to actually full-swing his arm. It's not that he's stupid. It's not that he doesn't think of it. It's not an oversight. It's just how the elasticity of his powers works. It's not "he can make his arms longer," it's "he can stretch," specifically, which is an entirely *passive* trait. He has no control over it-- if he did, he wouldn't be able to stretch when underwater, as seen in Arlong Park. It's not something he can just "turn on" to extend his reach-- he'd have to try and "crawl" his hand along a surface to slowly extend the length of his arm. In fact, we see this *several* times when he's immobilized in other scenes, like when he's caged by Buggy and tries to crawl his hand over to steal food. The only reason he can stretch as far as he can, with any kind of control, is just because he's ridiculously strong-- as we've seen constantly. But all the strength in the world doesn't let you throw something arbitrary distances without even moving your arm. It's not exactly a "superpower," like Mr. Fantastic or some such, insomuch as it's a sort of physical attribute? Like, perhaps he has *some* control over, like, the *magnitude* of his elasticity? But not just the ability to telekinetically move his body freely past his original range of motion without using momentum to "swing" limbs past his usual reach. That's why attacks like Whip have a huge range of motion to them, and why attacks like Gatling can work-- they rely on the "elastic momentum" and "rebounding" properties of Luffy's rubberlike body. But anyways. Sorry if this sounds all obnoxiously "um, actually" and such! Just seemed like there was a misunderstanding ever since, like, Luffy's climb up the cliff on Drum Island, and it felt like something that's caused way too much frustration, as a result. It's not really an obvious thing that they ever explain, or anything, but just, like... power system stuff is my main jam, so I just like to try and share when I notice that things are much more consistent and well-made than people might expect! Excuse the annoying wall-of-text for that, though. Great reactions, also! And not just the One Piece ones-- genuinely just the best for seasonal stuff, too! But after catching up with the One Piece reactions, I just felt a need to try and clear that up, so that it wouldn't be a continuing point of frustration in the future. ^^;

I was about to say potentially Luffys dad but I feel like he or Ace would know that. It kind of process of elimination confirms my Ace/Gol Roger theory though 🤓 (I'm not asking for confirmation). If anything I'm more interested in Luffy's dad and especially the Grandpa, he's gotta be a big deal for a Navy Admiral to know him (again I'm not asking for confirmation).
