Asking for parents' approval in marriage matters to people when they want their parents' support and approval. This might be a weird concept to grasp from westerners but we normally love our family and parents and would love to receive their blessings and congratulations in a happy event of our lives. That, or at least informing them about it is a form of respect. And if anyone wants to marry somebody their parents don't like, they are ultimately free to do so anyway. In those cases, people just go straight with a wedding. It's just ideally better to have both the blessings and choice.

I was planning on commenting after catching up, but I just had to agree that Kaya > Aoki. I don't know when she became my favorite character in this anime, but after this episode she became one of my favorite characters of all time. She's supportive, understanding, and can take a joke.
