I am not sure if it influenced them, but "Akumetsu" is a manga that came a year before Death Note. It's similar in a sense where a young student tries to bring justice to the world by murdering "bad people". Akumetsu is more action oriented than psychological and gets political (as in the protagonist has issues with corrupt politicians). I highly recommend it.
