I think you probably should skip through the first arc to remember what happened but I really hope you will watch at least the Kizumonogatari movies to get the whole package before you decide on the show.

The first arc, her mother was part of a cult and one of the cultist tried to rape her, she defended herself and injuried him and the mother blamed her for it and it caused a rift in the family. That's why in the first arc the crab took her weight (Emotional Burdens.)

2023-10-04 18:14:03 +0000 UTCThe first time i watched this series i was also confused af....and my second rewatch after like 1-2 years when more seasons came out i was basically watching new show again, cuz of so much dialogue, its hard to remember what was exactly said (even if u remember the gist of it). But what happened to her (what she explained in first eps) - she almost got r word, by a guy that was part from the cult her mom was part of..... So she fought back before anything happened, hence her mom got problems from the cult and the whole family fell apart... Also yeah you should do the movies(kizumonogatari) after this, then i wont blame you if u want to take a break from it, but def pick it up again, the characters, the arcs ahead are worth it!

The life lessons and meaningful messages underneath the story is priceless. It's understandable that you're having a difficult time keeping up considering your schedule, but hmmm... maybe consider seeing Kizumonogatari after this? I believe it had less dialogue (normal anime) and extremely action packed. That's where I got sold... from being an interesting series to something more.
