The original fairy tale of the Little Mermaid, Ariels voice was taken from her and she had to win the Prince's love to gain her human body and voice back. However he was going to marry someone else and the sea witch gave her the choice to kill the prince instead to reverse the curse she refused, so she sacrificed herself and let the Prince marry the other woman and Ariel turned into sea foam, dying. that's the "Turn into bubbles" reference. She's not allowed to speak until she dies.
