Japan TECHNICALLY has a word for "pedophile", but nobody except medical psychological experts use the official term for the mental disorder... even in official context non-doctors are unlikely to use the technical medical term that is officially translated into "pedophile" from a clinical POV. I mean outside of doctors using it, you MAY see it in court cases by tightass lawyers using it to prosecute for X charges, but those 2 professions are pretty much the only ones to use the technical term. In regards to the same word, the problem is that Japanese is a CONTEXT-BASED language, hence why same words can have dozens+ of definitions, and you just have to guess based on the context of the conversation & what you know about a person. This type of context-reliant vocabulary is often used in comedy series for a reason, after all (especially when you can read/write Japanese words differently even if they are said the exact same way, because of the different glyphs looking different despite being pronounced the same way. Cronchy is fucking the subs (as always). "Empress" is supposed to say "Empress Regnant" (jyotei), as in the empress is the regent for the adolescent Emperor, who due to his age can't make decisions for shit (hence regnant)

2025-03-02 06:49:29 +0000 UTCI think the "problem" with this series isn't the series itself, but people can't be bothered to watch a story develop - especially when it's a strong series like this that requires the story to develop. People want their action and development now and every episode, and anytime they have to watch a story build to a climax they get bored with it and call it "mid". In other words, people are lazy and impatient and as a result miss out on greatness.

If Mao Mao were the taster, it would seem like Gyukukyo is actually testing the food for poison that's served by the Empress Dowager, which would seem rude.

We also got the info that Luomen (maomaos stepdad) got banished for the death of the child but maomao mentioned that the extra punishment of removing a kneecap was normally not done in these cases. Bug lady also mentioned that the empress dowager is kind so maybe she let the child incident slide. Another interesting part is that the Empress Dowager gave birth to a child when she was not a child anymore which is rather odd for the late emperor. This definitely would make for a good RL drama adaptation
