Because of his god-like ability to destroy/restore dominating his magic calculation zone. In the procedure they removed his negative emotions, and reinforced his positive ones toward Mayuki. Mayuki would be in danger if they lose the Yotsuba's protection, and Tatsuya is aware of said potential danger.

2024-04-27 15:09:29 +0000 UTCI believe what Joe was trying to remember about Range Zero was them saying it was both a compliment (i.e. he's really good at close range) and an insult (i.e. he's inept at anything beyond "zero range"). Thematically very similar to how Tatsuya is/was looked down upon for lacking at traditional magic abilities.
