To clarify the Evil Piece system, the Devil King Ajuka Beelzebub (the green haired devil king from season 3 who gave him the key) told Issei to practice using each of the different promotions one by one since doing so will help him improve specific portions of his power more properly and unlock his potential. Controlling the Queen Promotion is hard for him because its every piece ability at once so he is starting with the Knight and Rook because he is a type that relies on physical strength and speed rather than magic (Rook boosts offense and defense while Knight boosts speed). He isnt as compatible with the Bishop promotion because that one boosts magic instead of strength so he is training that one last (his natural magic is low so he isnt good at attacking with magic unless he boosts first). Thats why his magic attacks werent very effective when he fought Sairaorg cuz when he promoted to Rook his strength and defense went up but his magic was still too low to do damage without using the Bishop promotion. Its also why he suddenly got really fast when he fought the youkai since he used the Knight promotion to increase his speed. If he used Rook to increase strength he wouldve risked wrecking the area and he wanted to be careful.
