N. Korean money is worthless - only slightly more valuable than Confederate currency , so everything on the black market has to be bought with foreign money, whether it is the Won, Yen or US$. Possessing foreign currency is actually illegal for citizens but if you want to buy something good (like a talking rice cooker), you can only get it on the illegal black markets. it is a fact of life in N. Korea
