WIND BREAKER S2 Ep. 2 Reaction [FULL]

I knew there was something special about Kaji the minute he showed up in episode 1. He was only there for like 5 mins or less and he didn't speak a word but I was immediately enthralled by him. He would have been in my top 3 characters for season 1 if they had spent more time with him instead of introducing Umemiya so early. But now that we've gotten to see Kaji be a perfect role model for Sakura and watched him kick hella ass, I am in love with him. All of our characters are a little broken, flawed in some detrimental way, but something about Kaji's flaws specifically and how he's adapted to still do the best he can is so intriguing to me. He's abrasive and blunt but jfc if he's not exactly what Sakura needs. His method of teaching too is also sort of a breath of fresh air for Sakura. It's closer to what he's used to - violence instead of kindness. While the softer lessons from Umemiya and his classmates are incredibly necessary for his journey, getting sucker punched by Kaji is just the thing Sakura needs every now and then to get out of his own head.

I'm so in love with this series and I just really need to blab about it so long ass comment incoming? lmao Season 1 did a lot of good set up and introspection into some of our character's mindsets and inner conflicts, especially Sakura (obviously) and Nirei. They hinted at some potential conflicts with Suo, Kaji and even Umemiya in season 1 and we're starting to see those plot points unfurl now. It's subtle and unspoken but there's this extreme darkness within Suo. A lot of his personality is a mask over something else, something more violent and cold. He always fights with open palms and a calm smile, but here. Here he was stone cold, no mirth in his eye. And he almost PUNCHED someone - closed fist. Sakura hasn't known him for that long but he's not stupid. He could tell something was wrong and he said just what Suo needed, whether intentionally or not, to keep him from falling to that dark side. Those two are like two sides of the same coin - Sakura has something soft and warm on the inside that he protects with his prickly exterior, Suo has something dark and twisted that he hides with carefully crafted humor and serenity. It's poetic in a way, even if I'm just thinking entirely too hard on it. (continuing in comments bc i cannot shut up about this show. no spoilers tho dw)
