I think they left it open for a season 2, depending on how the series performed, while still wrapping up everything that needed to be resolved.

The mass likely increased because he's doing a big S U C C on energy from the other side, since although matter can't come from nowhere (just like energy), it technically only applies in a CLOSED system, which this isn't because you can siphon energy from outside the system (i.e the OG main timeline universe). Actually now that I'm rewatching the episode in this reaction, I don't think it's matter w/ mass truly speaking, but solidified raw energy (so basically the minimal amount of mass that energy naturally has, is turned up to 100%, solidifying the energy basically), hence why the Gundam is the same shade as the energy bolts striking out of it like some sort of an aura. Since it's 100% energy, energy attacks are gonna be useless against it unless the energy value of the attack surpasses the energy value of the Gundam. Guess we now know where Amuro went this timeline, considering QGuuuuuux clearly has his voice (the Omega Psycommu?)...
