Just adding my 2 cents: When the original Reiko died, I don't think she committed suicide. That scene with the old lady implies to me that she finally decided to try and take a step forward. We know from previous episodes that Reiko suffered from very severe insomnia (the old male doctor actually told us so). From context with this episode we can assume that Reiko and the old lady both knew that the medicine developed by Hebinuma Pharma could potentially cure even this type of insomnia, but could also cause the death of the person taking it. Reiko didn't take the medicine earlier, because she saw no hope in life, so there was no incentive to risk anything. If she slowly died from insomnia, then she'd slowly die from insomnia. No need to change the status quo. But Kudo proposing to her made her see a spark of hope for the future, enough for her to consider the risk worth it if it allowed her to grow old together with him... which makes it all the more tragic that she lost this bet. If I could make a similar comparison, consider cancer treatment. There are types of cancer that will kill you within the next couple of years. For some of those, aggressive chemotherapy can save you, or it can kill you within a few months instead. At that point, you need to make a choice. Will you take the risky approach, with the potential to die early, or will you take the slow but definitive death instead. PS: For this one I was very sad that your chat didn't seem to notice these hints. Feel like it slightly tainted your final impression of this series.
