With regards to weight gain/loss, there was a study published recently that was interesting, although intentionally somewhat superficial.
They compared people in I think around 100 countries, trying to figure out whether food consumption or exercise is the more dominant factor in average weight in a population.
The result was that the average amount of exercise in countries with many overweight people (USA, UK, Germany, etc.) was considerably higher than in countries with less overweight people.
So whilest exercise is still important to keep healthy, what really determines your weight is what type of food and how much food you actually eat.
